Yet a central aspect of Maimonideanism has been overlooked: the formal reception of the Guide of the Perplexed through commentary. In Rewriting Maimonides, Igor H. De Souza offers a comprehensive analysis of six early philosophical commentaries, written in Italy, Spain, and France, by some of Maimonides' most loyal followers. The early commentaries represent the most creative period of exegesis of the Guide. De Souza's analysis dispels the notion that the tradition of commentary on the Guide is monolithic. Rather, De Souza's study illuminates how each commentator offers distinctive readings. Challenging the hierarchy of text and commentary, Rewriting Maimonides studies commentaries on the Guide as texts in their own right. De Souza approaches the form of commentary as a multifaceted cultural practice. Employing historical, philosophical, and literary methods, this publication fills a lacuna in the history of the Guide through a global perspective on commentary. 410 0$aJewish thought, philosophy, and religion 606 $aJewish philosophy$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aJudaism$vWorks to 1900 606 $aPhilosophy, Medieval 606 $aCommentary 606 $aGuide of the Perplexed 606 $aKommentar 606 $aMaimonides 606 $aMiddle Ages 606 $aMittelalter 606 $3(DE-601)104500719$3(DE-588)4136710-8$aKommentar$2gnd 606 $3(DE-601)104675152$3(DE-588)4049716-1$aRezeption$2gnd 606 $aHISTORY / Jewish$2bisacsh 610 $aCommentary. 610 $aGuide of the Perplexed. 610 $aMaimonides. 610 $aMiddle Ages. 615 0$aJewish philosophy 615 0$aJudaism 615 0$aPhilosophy, Medieval. 615 4$aCommentary. 615 4$aGuide of the Perplexed. 615 4$aKommentar. 615 4$aMaimonides. 615 4$aMiddle Ages. 615 4$aMittelalter. 615 7$aKommentar 615 7$aRezeption 615 7$aHISTORY / Jewish. 676 $a181/.06 700 $aDe Souza$b Igor H.$0987166 701 2$aMoses ben Solomon$cof Salerno,$f-1279.$01247366 701 2$aMoses ben Solomon$cof Salerno,$f-1279.$01247366 701 2$aGracian$b Zerahiah ben Isaac ben Shealtiel$factive 13th century.$01247367 701 2$aGracian$b Zerahiah ben Isaac ben Shealtiel$factive 13th century.$01247367 701 2$aFalaquera$b Shem Tov ben Joseph$fapproximately 1225-approximately 1295.$01247368 701 2$aFalaquera$b Shem Tov ben Joseph$fapproximately 1225-approximately 1295.$01247368 701 2$aCaspi$b Joseph$fapproximately 1280-approximately 1340.$01247369 701 2$aCaspi$b Joseph$fapproximately 1280-approximately 1340.$01247369 701 2$aCaspi$b Joseph$fapproximately 1280-approximately 1340.$01247369 701 2$aCaspi$b Joseph$fapproximately 1280-approximately 1340.$01247369 701 2$aMoses$cof Narbonne,$f-1362.$01247370 701 2$aMoses$cof Narbonne,$f-1362.$01247370 702 $aDe Souza$b Igor H.$f1980- 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996309056303316 996 $aRewriting Maimonides$92891730 997 $aUNISA
