Kathryn Kerby-Fulton discusses the major prophets and visionaries of such alternative traditions, who are characterised by their denunciation of clerical abuses, the urging of religious reform, and an ultimate historical optimism. Her book offers a proposal for the importance of such traditions, particularly as represented in the writings of Hildegard of Bingen, to the understanding of Langland's visionary mode and reformist ideology. Dr Kerby-Fulton also explores the relevance of the prophetic mentality fostered by Joachite thought, and the reactionary response which it triggered in antimendicant eschatology. Above all, this book provides a stimulating challenge to assumptions that Langland's views of the course and end of history are wholly conventional, or easily explained by Augustinian eschatology. The outcome of this study of contexts for Piers Plowman suggests that Langland's position in relation to different apocalyptic traditions was at once more sophisticated and more original than scholars have hitherto realised. 410 0$aCambridge studies in medieval literature ;$v7. 517 3 $aReformist Apocalypticism & Piers Plowman 606 $aApocalyptic literature$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnd of the world in literature 606 $aReformation$xEarly movements 615 0$aApocalyptic literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnd of the world in literature. 615 0$aReformation$xEarly movements. 676 $a821/.1 700 $aKerby-Fulton$b Kathryn$0550009 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996248341503316 996 $aReformist apocalypticism and Piers Plowman$9965042 997 $aUNISA 999 $aThis Record contains information from the Harvard Library Bibliographic Dataset, which is provided by the Harvard Library under its Bibliographic Dataset Use Terms and includes data made available by, among others the Library of Congress LEADER 01973nam0 22004213i 450 001 AQ10025856 005 20231121125406.0 010 $a3921575575 100 $a20091211e19841937||||0itac50 ba 101 | $alat$ager 102 $ade 181 1$6z01$ai $bxxxe 182 1$6z01$an 200 1 $a˜Die œUrkunden Karls 3.$fbearbeitet von P.
