Taking as its starting point the fundamental ambivalence of the Augustan concept the author studies canonical and non-canonical literature and uncovers the 'four nations' literary history of the period defined in terms of a struggle for control of the language of authority between Jacobite and Hanoverian writers. This struggle is seen to have crystallized Irish and Scottish opposition to the British state. The Jacobite cause generated powerful popular literature and the sources explored include ballads, broadsides and writing in Scots, Irish, Welsh and Gaelic. The author concludes that the literary history we inherit is built on the political outcome of the Revolution of 1688. 410 0$aCambridge studies in eighteenth-century English literature and thought ;$v23. 517 3 $aPoetry & Jacobite Politics in Eighteenth-Century Britain & Ireland 606 $aEnglish literature$y18th century$xHistory and criticism$xTheory, etc 606 $aPolitics and literature$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aPopular literature$zGreat Britain$xHistory and criticism 606 $aPolitics and literature$zIreland$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aPopular literature$zIreland$xHistory and criticism 606 $aCeltic literature$xHistory and criticism 606 $aCanon (Literature) 607 $aGreat Britain$xPolitics and government$y18th century 607 $aIreland$xPolitics and government$y18th century 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism$xTheory, etc. 615 0$aPolitics and literature$xHistory 615 0$aPopular literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aPolitics and literature$xHistory 615 0$aPopular literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aCeltic literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aCanon (Literature) 676 $a820.9/005 700 $aPittock$b Murray$0857099 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996248216303316 996 $aPoetry and Jacobite politics in eighteenth-century Britain and Ireland$92300862 997 $aUNISA 999 $aThis Record contains information from the Harvard Library Bibliographic Dataset, which is provided by the Harvard Library under its Bibliographic Dataset Use Terms and includes data made available by, among others the Library of Congress
