Langmuir to the history of antisemitism, together with some that have been published separately. The collection makes Langmuir's innovative work on the subject available to scholars in medieval and Jewish history and religious studies. The underlying question that unites the book is: what is antisemitism, where and when did it emerge, and why? After two chapters that highlight the failure of historians until recently to depict Jews and attitudes toward them fairly, the majority of the chapters are historical studies of crucial developments in the legal status of Jews and in beliefs about them during the Middle Ages. Two concluding chapters provide an overview. In the first, the author summarizes the historical developments, indicating concretely when and where antisemitism as he defines it emerged. In the second, Langmuir criticizes recent theories about prejudice and racism and develops his own general theory about the nature and dynamics of antisemitism. 410 0$aACLS Humanities E-Book. 606 $aAntisemitism 606 $aChristianity and antisemitism 606 $aJews$xLegal status, laws, etc$zFrance 606 $aBlood accusation 606 $aAntisemitism$xLegal status, laws, etc$zFrance 606 $aChristianity and antisemitism 606 $aJews 606 $aBlood accusation 606 $aMiddle East$2HILCC 606 $aRegions & Countries - Asia & the Middle East$2HILCC 606 $aHistory & Archaeology$2HILCC 607 $aFrance$xEthnic relations 615 0$aAntisemitism. 615 0$aChristianity and antisemitism. 615 0$aJews$xLegal status, laws, etc. 615 0$aBlood accusation. 615 0$aAntisemitism$xLegal status, laws, etc 615 0$aChristianity and antisemitism 615 0$aJews 615 0$aBlood accusation 615 7$aMiddle East 615 7$aRegions & Countries - Asia & the Middle East 615 7$aHistory & Archaeology 700 $aLangmuir$b Gavin I$0539878 712 02$aAmerican Council of Learned Societies. 801 0$bMiU 801 1$bMiU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996248110403316 996 $aToward a definition of antisemitism$92300455 997 $aUNISA
