The Hellenistic poet Herodas wrote Mimes, in which everyday life is portrayed and character as opposed to plot depicted. Mimes by Sophron (fifth century BCE) and anonymous mime fragments also represent that genre.$bThis volume collects important examples of Greek literary portraiture. The Characters of Theophrastus consists of thirty fictional sketches of men who are each dominated by a single fault, such as arrogance, boorishness, or superstition. The Hellenistic poet Herodas wrote mimes, a popular entertainment in which one actor or a small group portrayed a situation from everyday life, concentrating on depiction of character rather than on plot. The volume also includes a new translation and text of extant portions of the mimes of Sophron, a Syracusan of the fifth century BCE Here too is a selection of anonymous mime fragments. The work of Sophron and the anonymous mime fragments are newly added to the Loeb Classical Library in this second edition of a volume published in 1993. Jeffrey Rusten and Ian Cunningham have also updated their editions of Theophrastus and Herodas. 606 $aCharacter sketches 606 $aGreek literature$vTranslations into English 606 $aCynics (Greek philosophy)$vPoetry 606 $aPantomimes 606 $aCharacter sketches$3(OCoLC)852283$2fast 606 $aCharacters and characteristics$3(OCoLC)852293$2fast 606 $aCynics (Greek philosophy)$3(OCoLC)886091$2fast 606 $aGreek drama (Comedy)$3(OCoLC)947136$2fast 606 $aGreek literature$3(OCoLC)947441$2fast 606 $aPantomimes$3(OCoLC)1052248$2fast 607 $aGreece$2fast 615 0$aCharacter sketches. 615 0$aGreek literature 615 0$aCynics (Greek philosophy) 615 0$aPantomimes. 615 7$aCharacter sketches 615 7$aCharacters and characteristics 615 7$aCynics (Greek philosophy) 615 7$aGreek drama (Comedy) 615 7$aGreek literature 615 7$aPantomimes 676 $a888/.01/08 700 $aTheophrastus$069807 702 2$aHerodas 702 $aSophron$fapproximately 470 B.C.-400 B.C., 702 $aRusten$b Jeffrey S. 702 $aCunningham$b Ian Campbell 801 0$bMaCbHUP 801 2$bTLC 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996214876703316 996 $aCharacteres$917461 997 $aUNISA
