Regional sanctuaries ameliorated competition between city-states, publicized the results of competitive rituals for males, and encouraged judicial alternatives to violence. Female ritual efforts, focused on reproduction and the health of the family, are less visible, but, as this provocative study shows, no less significant. Taking a fresh look at the epigraphical evidence for Greek ritual practice in the context of recent studies of landscape and political organization, Susan Guettel Cole illuminates the profoundly gendered nature of Greek cult practice and explains the connections between female rituals and the integrity of the community. In a rich integration of ancient sources and current theory, Cole brings together the complex evidence for Greek ritual practice. She discusses relevant medical and philosophical theories about the female body; considers Greek ideas about purity, pollution, and ritual purification; and examines the cult of Artemis in detail. Her nuanced study demonstrates the social contribution of women's rituals to the sustenance of the polis and the identity of its people. 606 $aWomen$xReligious life$zGreece$xHistory 606 $aSacred space$zGreece$xHistory 606 $aArtemis (Greek deity)$xCult 607 $aGreece$xReligion 610 $aancient history. 610 $aancient law. 610 $aanthropology. 610 $aantiquity. 610 $aarete. 610 $aartemis. 610 $aathenian democracy. 610 $acity states. 610 $acommunity. 610 $acompetition. 610 $afamily. 610 $afemale body. 610 $afeminism. 610 $afertility. 610 $afolk religion. 610 $afolklore. 610 $agender difference. 610 $agender roles. 610 $agender. 610 $agreece. 610 $agreek ritual. 610 $agreeks. 610 $ahubris. 610 $alaw. 610 $alegal system. 610 $amasculinity. 610 $amythology. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $apolic. 610 $apollution. 610 $apurity. 610 $areligion. 610 $areproduction. 610 $arite. 610 $aritual. 610 $asacred space. 610 $asexuality. 610 $asocial body. 610 $atradition. 610 $aviolence. 610 $awomen. 610 $awomens rituals. 615 0$aWomen$xReligious life$xHistory. 615 0$aSacred space$xHistory. 615 0$aArtemis (Greek deity)$xCult. 676 $a292.3/5 700 $aCole$b Susan Guettel$0167144 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910783388703321 996 $aLandscapes, gender, and ritual space$91116977 997 $aUNINA 999 $p$178.50$u12/09/2016$5Relig
