Yet with the expansion of settlers into the First Nations territories that became southern Alberta and BC, liberalism proved to be an exclusionary rather than inclusionary force. Between 1877 and 1927, government officials, police officers, church representatives, ordinary settlers, and many others operated to exclude and reform Indigenous people. Presenting Anglo-Canadian liberal capitalist values and structures and interests as normal, natural, and beyond reproach devalued virtually every aspect of Indigenous cultures. This book explores the means used to facilitate and justify colonization, their effects on Indigenous economic, political, social, and spiritual lives, and how they were resisted. 410 0$aWest unbound. 606 $aIndians of North America$zAlberta$xHistory 606 $aIndians of North America$zBritish Columbia$xHistory 606 $aLiberalism$zAlberta$xHistory 606 $aLiberalism$zBritish Columbia$xHistory 606 $aMarginality, Social$zAlberta$xHistory 606 $aMarginality, Social$zBritish Columbia$xHistory 607 $aNorthwest Territories$xHistory$y1870-1905 607 $aAlberta$xHistory$y1905-1945 607 $aBritish Columbia$xHistory$y1871- 610 $aindigenous people 610 $aFirst Nations 610 $acolonization 610 $asettlers 615 0$aIndians of North America$xHistory. 615 0$aIndians of North America$xHistory. 615 0$aLiberalism$xHistory. 615 0$aLiberalism$xHistory. 615 0$aMarginality, Social$xHistory. 615 0$aMarginality, Social$xHistory. 676 $a971.1004/97 700 $aSmith$b Keith D$g(Keith Douglas),$f1953-$0984109 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996212789103316 996 $aLiberalism, surveillances and resistance$92247558 997 $aUNISA
