Here, well-known cohorts of Rembrandt are examined for the ways in which they expressed themselves by defying conservative values and norms. This study reveals how these young men rebelled, breaking from previous generations: letting their hair grow long, wearing colorful clothing, drinking excessively, challenging city guards, being promiscuous, smoking, and singing lewd songs. Cogently argued, this study paints a compelling portrait of the youth culture of the Dutch Golden Age, at a time when the rising popularity of print made dissemination of new cultural ideas possible, while rising incomes and liberal attitudes created a generation of men behaving badly. 410 0$aAmsterdam studies in the Dutch golden age. 606 $aYoung men$zNetherlands$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aYoung men in art 606 $aMasculinity$zNetherlands$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aYoung men$xSexual behavior$zNetherlands$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aYoung men$xAlcohol use$zNetherlands$xHistory$y17th century 607 $aNetherlands$xSocial life and customs$y17th century 610 $ageschiedenis 610 $ahistory 610 $aAdolescence 610 $aAmsterdam 610 $aDutch Republic 610 $aEarly modern period 610 $aLeiden 610 $aNetherlands 615 0$aYoung men$xHistory 615 0$aYoung men in art. 615 0$aMasculinity$xHistory 615 0$aYoung men$xSexual behavior$xHistory 615 0$aYoung men$xAlcohol use$xHistory 676 $a700.949205 700 $aRoberts$b Benjamin$f1965-$0869991 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996206840703316 996 $aSex and drugs before rock 'n' roll$91942301 997 $aUNISA
