Campaigns like this support a public narrative that portrays teen mothers as threatening the moral order, bankrupting state coffers, and causing high rates of poverty, incarceration, and school dropout. These efforts demonize teen mothers but tell us nothing about their lives before they became pregnant. In this myth-shattering book, the authors tell the life stories of 108 brown, white, and black teen mothers, exposing the problems in their lives often overlooked in pregnancy prevention campaigns. Some stories are tragic and painful, marked by sexual abuse, partner violence, and school failure. Others depict "girl next door" characters whose unintended pregnancies lay bare insidious gender disparities. Offering a fresh perspective on the links between teen births and social inequalities, this book demonstrates how the intersecting hierarchies of gender, race, and class shape the biographies of young mothers. 606 $aTeenage pregnancy$zUnited States 606 $aTeenage girls$zUnited States$xSocial conditions 610 $a21st century. 610 $abiographical. 610 $achildhood. 610 $adropout rates. 610 $aethnographers. 610 $aethnography. 610 $agender issues. 610 $aincarceration. 610 $amoral order. 610 $amotherhood. 610 $anew parents. 610 $anew york city. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $apartner violence. 610 $apoverty cycle. 610 $apublic education campaigns. 610 $arace and class issues. 610 $aschool dropouts. 610 $aschool failure. 610 $asexual abuse. 610 $asocial inequalities. 610 $asociologists. 610 $asociology. 610 $ateen moms. 610 $ateen mothers. 610 $ateen parents. 610 $ateen pregnancy rates. 610 $ateen pregnancy. 610 $atragic. 610 $ayoung mothers. 615 0$aTeenage pregnancy 615 0$aTeenage girls$xSocial conditions. 676 $a306.874/32 700 $aErdmans$b Mary Patrice$01617409 702 $aBlack$b Timothy 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910807442703321 996 $aOn becoming a teen mom$94001364 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01428nas 2200469- 450 001 996205657503316 005 20230222213018.0 011 $a1876-8776 035 $a(OCoLC)609694927 035 $a(CKB)110992357408580 035 $a(CONSER)--2019205700 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110992357408580 100 $a20100427a19989999 --- b 101 0 $adut 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aTijdschrift voor gezondheidswetenschappen 210 1$a[Nijmegen, Netherlands] :$c[Redactie TSG] 210 31$a[Netherlands] :$cBohn Stafleu van Loghum 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 $a1388-7491 517 1 $aTSG 531 $aTSG 606 $aMedical care$vPeriodicals 606 $aPublic health$zNetherlands$vPeriodicals 606 $aMedical care$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01013753 606 $aPublic health$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01082238 607 $aNetherlands$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aMedical care 615 0$aPublic health 615 7$aMedical care. 615 7$aPublic health. 712 02$aVereniging voor Volksgezondheid en Wetenschap, 712 02$aNederlandse Vereniging voor Preventie en GVO, 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a996205657503316 996 $aTijdschrift voor gezondheidswetenschappen$92194097 997 $aUNISA
