Drawing on a combination of methods including social network analysis, existing histories of Dutch and French speaking literature are questioned. This study shows, for instance, how author?s societies and literary journals were functional in the symbolic struggle between ?dilettante? writers on the one hand and self declared ?professional? authors on the other. It concludes that Belgian authorship was shaped within a social space that was much broader than the national social space, especially as far as the social construction of the Belgian author-intellectual was concerned. As such, being an intellectual became an important category of personal identity. 606 $aBelgian literature$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aBelgian literature$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 610 $aliteraire instituten 610 $abelle epoque 610 $aliterary sociability 610 $asocial network analysis 610 $abelgische literatuur 610 $aliterary institutions 610 $aliteraire gezelligheid 610 $asociaal netwerk analyse 610 $abelgian literature 615 0$aBelgian literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aBelgian literature$xHistory and criticism. 700 $aVerbruggen$b Christophe$0800988 801 0$bDLC 801 1$bDLC 801 2$bUkMaJRU 912 $a996201667703316 996 $aSchrijverschap in de Belgische belle époque$91945397 997 $aUNISA
