His Life of Apollonius of Tyana, Lives of the Sophists, and Imagines reconceive in different ways Greek religion, philosophy, and art in and for the world of the Roman Empire. In this volume, Heroicus and Gymnasticus, two works of equal creativity and sophistication, together with two brief Discourses (Dialexeis), complete the Loeb edition of his writings. Heroicus is a conversation in a vineyard amid ruins of the Protesilaus shrine (opposite Troy on the Hellespont), between a wise and devout vinedresser and an initially skeptical Phoenician sailor, about the beauty, continuing powers, and worship of the heroes. With information from his local hero, the vinedresser reveals unknown stories of the Trojan campaign especially featuring Protesilaus and Palamedes, and describes complex, miraculous, and violent rituals in the cults of Achilles. Gymnasticus is the sole surviving ancient treatise on sports. It reshapes conventional ideas about the athletic body and expertise of the athletic trainer and also explores the history of the Olympic Games and other major Greek athletic festivals, portraying them as distinctive venues for the display of knowledge. 606 $aDialogues, Greek$vTranslations into English 606 $aGymnastics$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aGymnastics 606 $aHero worship$zGreece$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aHero worship$zGreece 606 $aHeroes$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aPhysical education and training$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aPhysical education and training$zGreece$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aPhysical education and training$zGreece 606 $aProtesilaus (Greek mythology)$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aTrojan War$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aDialogues, Greek$3(OCoLC)892521$2fast 606 $aGymnastics$3(OCoLC)949583$2fast 606 $aHeroes$3(OCoLC)955558$2fast 606 $aPhysical education and training$3(OCoLC)1062401$2fast 606 $aProtesilaus (Greek mythology)$3(OCoLC)1079789$2fast 607 $aGreece$2fast 608 $aDialogues, Greek$vTranslations into English. 615 0$aDialogues, Greek 615 0$aGymnastics 615 0$aGymnastics. 615 0$aHero worship 615 0$aHero worship 615 0$aHeroes 615 0$aPhysical education and training 615 0$aPhysical education and training 615 0$aPhysical education and training 615 0$aProtesilaus (Greek mythology) 615 0$aTrojan War 615 7$aDialogues, Greek 615 7$aGymnastics 615 7$aHeroes 615 7$aPhysical education and training 615 7$aProtesilaus (Greek mythology) 700 $aPhilostratus$cthe Athenian,$factive 2nd century-3rd century,$0281640 702 $aK onig$b Jason 702 $aRusten$b Jeffrey S. 801 0$bMaCbHUP 801 2$bTLC 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996199219503316 996 $aHeroicus$92558375 997 $aUNISA LEADER 04192nam 22006974a 450 001 9910788802203321 005 20210423031850.0 010 $a1-282-93524-0 010 $a9786612935244 010 $a1-4008-2377-3 024 7 $a10.1515/9781400823772 035 $a(CKB)3390000000007767 035 $a(EBL)616674 035 $a(OCoLC)432429107 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000336312 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11229529 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000336312 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10279154 035 $a(PQKB)10215876 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000695212 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12279413 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000695212 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10675766 035 $a(PQKB)10463013 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse36322 035 $a(DE-B1597)446774 035 $a(OCoLC)979881391 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781400823772 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL616674 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10312475 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL293524 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC616674 035 $a(EXLCZ)993390000000007767 100 $a20071106d2008 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|nu---|u||u 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aCreating the national security state $ea history of the law that transformed america$b[electronic resource] /$fDouglas T. This is the definitive study of the intense political and bureaucratic struggles that surrounded the passage and initial implementation of the law. Focusing on the critical years from 1937 to 1960, Douglas Stuart shows how disputes over the lessons of Pearl Harbor and World War II informed the debates that culminated in the legislation, and how the new national security agencies were subsequently transformed by battles over missions, budgets, and influence during the early cold war. Stuart provides an in-depth account of the fight over Truman's plan for unification of the armed services, demonstrating how this dispute colored debates about institutional reform. He traces the rise of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the transformation of the CIA, and the institutionalization of the National Security Council. He also illustrates how the development of this network of national security institutions resulted in the progressive marginalization of the State Department. Stuart concludes with some insights that will be of value to anyone interested in the current debate over institutional reform. 606 $aNational security$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aUnited States$xDefenses$xLaw and legislation$xHistory$y20th century 615 0$aNational security$xLaw and legislation$xHistory 676 $a343.7301 700 $aStuart$b Douglas T$01182523 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788802203321 996 $aCreating the national security state$93853016 997 $aUNINA
