The exploration adopts a unique theoretical approach which integrates corpus-linguistic theories on meaning (as a social construct, usage and paraphrase) with a corpus-linguistic lexical model. It employs a new complex but workable methodology which combines computational tools with manual examination to tease meaning out of corpus evidence, to compare and contrast lexical items that do not match up neatly between languages. It looks at sadness expressions both within and across languages in terms of three corpus-linguistic structural categories, i.e. colligation, collocation and semantic association/preference, and paraphrase (both explicit and implicit) to capture their subtle nuances of meaning, disclose the culture-specific conceptualisations encoded in them, and highlight their respective cultural distinctiveness of emotion. By presenting multidisciplinary original work, Sadness Expressions in English and Chinese will be of interest to researchers in corpus linguistics, contrastive lexical semantics, psychology, bilingual lexicography and language pedagogy"--Bloomsbury Publishing. 410 0$aCorpus and discourse.$pResearch in corpus and discourse. 606 $aEmotive (Linguistics) 606 $aLanguage and emotions 606 $aEnglish language$xGrammar, Comparative$xChinese 606 $aChinese language$xGrammar, Comparative$xEnglish 606 $aEmotions$xCross-cultural studies 606 $aComparative linguistics 606 $aPsycholinguistics 606 $2Computational linguistics 615 0$aEmotive (Linguistics) 615 0$aLanguage and emotions. 615 0$aEnglish language$xGrammar, Comparative$xChinese. 615 0$aChinese language$xGrammar, Comparative$xEnglish. 615 0$aEmotions$xCross-cultural studies. 615 0$aComparative linguistics. 615 0$aPsycholinguistics. 676 $a420.1/43 700 $aZhang$b Ruihua$c(Linguist)$01068436 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910511315703321 996 $aSadness Expressions in English and Chinese$92553276 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05511oam 22010334a 450 001 996588061903316 005 20240318144905.0 010 $a0-8147-5927-0 010 $a0-585-33075-1 024 7 $a10.18574/9780814759271 035 $a(CKB)111004368614244 035 $a(MH)007416533-X 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000197355 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12074356 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000197355 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10154401 035 $a(PQKB)10221776 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC2081673 035 $a(WaSeSS)IndRDA00124916 035 $a(DE-B1597)547856 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780814759271 035 $a(OCoLC)45844045 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse87072 035 $a(EXLCZ)99111004368614244 100 $a19961230d1997 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aManifesto of a tenured radical$fCary Nelson 210 1$aNew York :$cNew York University Press,$d1997. 210 3$aBaltimore, Md. :$cProject MUSE,$d2021 210 4$dİ1997. 215 $a1 online resource (vi, 243 p. ) 225 0 $aCultural front 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 $a0-8147-5794-4 311 $a0-8147-5797-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aAgainst English as it was : theory and the politics of the discipline -- Multiculturalism without guarantees : from anthologies to the social text -- Relativism, politics, and ethics : writing literary history in the shadow of Poststructuralism -- Always already cultural studies : academic conferences and a manifesto -- Progressive pedagogy without apologies : the cultural work of teaching noncanonical poetry -- Canon fodder : an evening with William Bennett, Lynne Cheney, and Dinesh D'Souza -- Hate speech and political correctness -- What happens when we put the left at the center? -- Dichotomy is where the money is : anti-intellectualism within and outside the university -- Late capitalism arrives on campus : the corporate university's expendable employees -- What is to be done? : a twelve-step program for academia -- Reaction and resistance at Yale and the MLA : union organizing and the job market. 330 $aIn an age when innovative scholarly work is at an all-time high, the academy itself is being rocked by structural change. Funding is plummeting. Tenure increasingly seems a prospect for only the elite few. Ph.D.'s are going begging for even adjunct work. Into this tumult steps Cary Nelson, with a no- holds-barred account of recent developments in higher education. Eloquent and witty, Manifesto of a Tenured Radical urges academics to apply the theoretical advances of the last twenty years to an analysis of their own practices and standards of behavior. In the process, Nelson offers a devastating critique of current inequities and a detailed proposal for change in the form of A Twelve-Step Program for Academia. 410 0$aCultural front (Series) 606 $aKritische Pa?dagogik$3(DE-588)4137945-7$2gnd 606 $aErlebnisbericht$3(DE-588)4133254-4$2gnd 606 $aCollegelehrer$3(DE-588)4301831-2$2gnd 606 $aHumanities$xStudy and teaching (Higher)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00963641 606 $aEnglish philology$xStudy and teaching (Higher)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00912271 606 $aEducation, Higher$xPolitical aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00903087 606 $aEducation, Higher$xAims and objectives$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00903015 606 $aCritical pedagogy$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00883676 606 $aCollege teachers$xTenure$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00868174 606 $aCanon (Literature)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00845906 606 $aEducation, Higher$xPolitical aspects$zUnited States 606 $aCollege teachers$xTenure$zUnited States 606 $aCanon (Literature) 606 $aCritical pedagogy$zUnited States 606 $aHumanities$xStudy and teaching (Higher)$zUnited States 606 $aEnglish philology$xStudy and teaching (Higher)$zUnited States 606 $aEducation, Higher$xAims and objectives$zUnited States 607 $aUSA$2swd 607 $aUSA$2gnd 607 $aUnited States$2fast 615 07$aKritische Pa?dagogik. 615 07$aErlebnisbericht. 615 07$aCollegelehrer. 615 0$aHumanities$xStudy and teaching (Higher) 615 0$aEnglish philology$xStudy and teaching (Higher) 615 0$aEducation, Higher$xPolitical aspects. 615 0$aEducation, Higher$xAims and objectives. 615 0$aCritical pedagogy. 615 0$aCollege teachers$xTenure. 615 0$aCanon (Literature) 615 0$aEducation, Higher$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aCollege teachers$xTenure 615 0$aCanon (Literature) 615 0$aCritical pedagogy 615 0$aHumanities$xStudy and teaching (Higher) 615 0$aEnglish philology$xStudy and teaching (Higher) 615 0$aEducation, Higher$xAims and objectives 676 $a378.73 700 $aNelson$b Cary$0687870 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996588061903316 996 $aManifesto of a Tenured Radical$92866877 997 $aUNISA 999 $aThis Record contains information from the Harvard Library Bibliographic Dataset, which is provided by the Harvard Library under its Bibliographic Dataset Use Terms and includes data made available by, among others the Library of Congress
