Jenkins and Justin Peck explore the hereto mostly unexamined history of the rise and fall of civil rights legislation in Congress from 1861 to 1918. The authors argue that the waxing and waning of civil rights efforts in Congress is directly tied to whether African American voters were able to influence Congressional elections. As long as African American voters could deliver seats in the south to the Republicans, the party paid attention to their needs. But, after the end of Reconstruction and with the disenfranchisement of African Americans, Congressional Republicans lost interest in civil rights laws. 410 0$aChicago scholarship online. 606 $aCivil rights movements$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aAfrican Americans$xCivil rights$xHistory 606 $aAfrican Americans$xPolitical activity$xHistory 615 0$aCivil rights movements$xHistory. 615 0$aAfrican Americans$xCivil rights$xHistory. 615 0$aAfrican Americans$xPolitical activity$xHistory. 676 $a323.1196073 700 $aJenkins$b Jeffery A.$01111487 702 $aPeck$b Justin 801 0$bStDuBDS 801 1$bStDuBDS 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910554277503321 996 $aCongress and the first Civil Rights era, 1861-1918$92815936 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00995nam0 22002651i 450 001 UON00020822 005 20231205102018.105 010 $a96-935024-5-0 100 $a20020107d1993 |0itac50 ba 101 $abal 102 $aPK 105 $a|||| 1|||| 200 1 $aUrdu abad ki muxtasir tarix$fSalim Akhtar 210 $aLahore$cSang-i-Mil$d1993 371 p. ; 20 cm 606 $aLetteratura urdu $xStoria$3UONC001863$2FI 620 $aPK$dLahore$3UONL000599 686 $aSI VI DA$cSubcontinente indiano - Letteratura Urdu - Critica$2A 700 1$aAKHTAR$bSalim$3UONV014279$0641903 712 $aSang-i-Mil$3UONV249176$4650 801 $aIT$bSOL$c20251003$gRICA 899 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$2UONSI 912 $aUON00020822 950 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$dSI SI VI DA 008 $eSI SA 80491 5 008 996 $aUrdu abad ki muxtasir tarix$91196849 997 $aUNIOR
