The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) was prominent and innovative in this assertion of muscle.Metal that does not Bend traces Numsa's accumulation, from a few small unions in a handful of factories to the staging of national strikes involving thousands of workers in auto and engineering. It examines how the union used its influence in macroeconomic and political arenas. Numsa was Cosatu's most radical socialist affiliate, and the book explores its attempts to implement its vision. Historians have framed apartheid's downfall as resulting from the activities of the exiled liberation movement, global anti-apartheid boycott strategies and internal township insurrection. This book reasserts the critical role of the internal labour movement. 606 $aMetal-workers$xLabor unions$zSouth Africa 606 $aStrikes and lockouts$xMetal-workers$zSouth Africa 615 0$aMetal-workers$xLabor unions 615 0$aStrikes and lockouts$xMetal-workers 676 $a331.881710968 700 $aForrest$b Kally$01722099 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910816279903321 996 $aMetal that will not bend$94122191 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02832nam 22007572 450 001 9910813891203321 005 20151002020704.0 010 $a0-7486-5217-5 010 $a1-282-62036-3 010 $a9786612620362 010 $a0-7486-4090-8 024 7 $a10.1515/9780748640904 035 $a(CKB)2560000000011164 035 $a(EBL)537006 035 $a(OCoLC)638860132 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000415442 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11263188 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000415442 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10410709 035 $a(PQKB)10784345 035 $a(UkCbUP)CR9780748640904 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0000055660 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL537006 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10391744 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL262036 035 $a(DE-B1597)615606 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780748640904 035 $a(OCoLC)1302163654 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC537006 035 $a(EXLCZ)992560000000011164 100 $a20120514d2009|||| uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aDarwin's bards $eBritish and American poetry in the age of evolution /$fJohn Holmes$b[electronic resource] 210 1$aEdinburgh :$cEdinburgh University Press,$d2009. 215 $a1 online resource (xiv, 288 pages) $cdigital, PDF file(s) 300 $aTitle from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 02 Oct 2015). 311 $a0-7486-9207-X 311 $a0-7486-3940-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 263-282) and index. 327 $aPoetry in the age of Darwin -- Poetry and 'non-Darwinian revolution' -- God -- Death -- Humanity's place in nature -- Humans and other animals -- Love and sex -- On balance -- Conclusion. 330 $aDarwin's Bards is a comprehensive study of how poets have responded to the ideas of Charles Darwin. 606 $aEnglish poetry$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aAmerican poetry$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish poetry$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aAmerican poetry$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEvolution (Biology) in literature 606 $aNatural selection 615 0$aEnglish poetry$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aAmerican poetry$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish poetry$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aAmerican poetry$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEvolution (Biology) in literature. 615 0$aNatural selection. 676 $a821.00936 686 $aHL 1191$qBSZ$2rvk 700 $aHolmes$b John$f1973-$01683967 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910813891203321 996 $aDarwin's bards$94055132 997 $aUNINA
