PR-Measures (H-statistics) of Competitiveness of Banking Systems Around the World 330 3 $aAs in other sectors, competition in finance matters for allocative, productive and dynamic efficiency. Theory suggests, however, that unfettered competition is not first best given the special features of finance. I review these analytics and describe how to assess the degree of competition in markets for financial services. Existing research shows that the degree of competition greatly varies across markets, largely driven by barriers to entry and exit. I argue that changes in financial services industries require updated competition policies and institutional arrangements, but that practices still fall short. Furthermore, I show that developing countries face some specific competition challenges. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2009/045 606 $aCompetition 606 $aFinance 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking, Foreign$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aCommercial banks$2imf 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aEconomic sectors$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aFinancial Institutions and Services: General$2imf 606 $aFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and Regulation$2imf 606 $aFinancial institutions$2imf 606 $aFinancial markets$2imf 606 $aFinancial sector$2imf 606 $aFinancial services industry$2imf 606 $aFinancial services$2imf 606 $aForeign banks$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and Regulation$2imf 606 $aIndustries: Financial Services$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 607 $aUnited States$2imf 615 0$aCompetition. 615 0$aFinance. 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aBanks and banking 615 7$aBanks and banking, Foreign 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aCommercial banks 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aEconomic sectors 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aFinancial Institutions and Services: General 615 7$aFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and Regulation 615 7$aFinancial institutions 615 7$aFinancial markets 615 7$aFinancial sector 615 7$aFinancial services industry 615 7$aFinancial services 615 7$aForeign banks 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and Regulation 615 7$aIndustries: Financial Services 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMortgages 676 $a384.29134 700 $aClaessens$b Stijn$0282431 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910960891303321 996 $aCompetition in the Financial Sector$94372407 997 $aUNINA
