Volatile international oil markets and the acceleration of the energy transition has challenged the notion that oil revenues are sufficient to sustain oil economies in the near to medium term. But what is the meaning of economic sustainability? The book discusses the multiple dimensions of the concept: economic diversification, continuing value of resources, taxation and fiscal development, labor market sustainability, sustainable income distribution, environmental sustainability, political order (democracy or authoritarianism) and sustainability, regional integration. The overarching message in this book is that we should move on from the simplistic branding of the Gulf economies as unsustainable and tackle the details of which adaptations they might need to undertake. Giacomo Luciani teaches at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, and at the Paris School of International Affairs, Sciences Po in Paris. His edited book The Rentier State (1987, with H. Beblawi), is frequently cited as reference for the concept. His latest edited book, Combining Economic and Political Development (2017), discusses economic policies to support democratic transitions and is available in open access. Tom Moerenhout teaches at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and is a scholar at SIPA's Center on Global Energy Policy. He is involved as a practitioner on energy sector and structural reforms through his work as a consultant for the World Bank, International Institute for Sustainable Development and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, amongothers. 410 0$aThe Political Economy of the Middle East,$x2522-8862 606 $aInternational economic relations 606 $aSustainability 606 $aPower resources 606 $aEnergy policy 606 $aEnergy policy 606 $aMiddle East$xPolitics and government 606 $aMiddle East$xEconomic conditions 606 $aAfrica, North$xEconomic conditions 606 $aInternational Political Economy' 606 $aSustainability 606 $aNatural Resource and Energy Economics 606 $aEnergy Policy, Economics and Management 606 $aMiddle Eastern Politics 606 $aMiddle Eastern/North African Economics 615 0$aInternational economic relations. 615 0$aSustainability. 615 0$aPower resources. 615 0$aEnergy policy. 615 0$aEnergy policy. 615 0$aMiddle East$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aMiddle East$xEconomic conditions. 615 0$aAfrica, North$xEconomic conditions. 615 14$aInternational Political Economy'. 615 24$aSustainability. 615 24$aNatural Resource and Energy Economics. 615 24$aEnergy Policy, Economics and Management. 615 24$aMiddle Eastern Politics. 615 24$aMiddle Eastern/North African Economics. 676 $a338.9 686 $aBUS069000$aBUS070040$aPOL023000$aPOL059000$aSCI026000$2bisacsh 700 $aLuciani$b Giacomo$f1948-$0120087 702 $aLuciani$b Giacomo$f1948- 702 $aMoerenhout$b Tom 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910420942103321 996 $aWhen Can Oil Economies Be Deemed Sustainable$94399975 997 $aUNINA
