Capital-Augmenting Technological Progress""; ""References"" 330 3 $aThe past two decades have seen a decline in labor's share of national income in several industrial countries. This paper analyzes the role of three factors in explaining movements in labor's share--factor-biased technological progress, openness to trade, and changes in employment protection--using a panel of 18 industrial countries over 1960-2000. Since most studies suggest that globalization and rapid technological progress (associated with accelerated information technology development) began in the mid-1980s, the sample is split in 1985 into preglobalization/pre-IT revolution and postglobalization/post-IT revolution eras. The results suggest that the decline in labor's share during the past few decades in the OECD member countries may have been largely an equilibrium, rather than a cyclical, phenomenon, as the distribution of national income between labor and capital adjusted to capital-augmenting technological progress and a more globalized world economy. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/294 606 $aNational income$zDeveloped countries$xEconometric models 606 $aForeign trade and employment$zDeveloped countries 606 $aWages and labor productivity$zDeveloped countries 606 $aEmployees$xEffect of technological innovations on$zDeveloped countries 606 $aWages$xEffect of technological innovations on$zDeveloped countries 606 $aWage bargaining$zDeveloped countries 606 $aGlobalization 606 $aAggregate Human Capital$2imf 606 $aAggregate Labor Productivity$2imf 606 $aEconomic theory$2imf 606 $aEmployment protection$2imf 606 $aEmployment$2imf 606 $aEnvironmental Accounts$2imf 606 $aIncome economics$2imf 606 $aIntergenerational Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aLabor Contracts$2imf 606 $aLabor economics$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics: General$2imf 606 $aLabor share$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aManpower policy$2imf 606 $aMeasurement and Data on National Income and Product Accounts and Wealth$2imf 606 $aNational income$2imf 606 $aUnemployment$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 606 $aWages, Compensation, and Labor Costs: General$2imf 607 $aUnited States$2imf 615 0$aNational income$xEconometric models. 615 0$aForeign trade and employment 615 0$aWages and labor productivity 615 0$aEmployees$xEffect of technological innovations on 615 0$aWages$xEffect of technological innovations on 615 0$aWage bargaining 615 0$aGlobalization. 615 7$aAggregate Human Capital 615 7$aAggregate Labor Productivity 615 7$aEconomic theory 615 7$aEmployment protection 615 7$aEmployment 615 7$aEnvironmental Accounts 615 7$aIncome economics 615 7$aIntergenerational Income Distribution 615 7$aLabor Contracts 615 7$aLabor economics 615 7$aLabor Economics: General 615 7$aLabor share 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aManpower policy 615 7$aMeasurement and Data on National Income and Product Accounts and Wealth 615 7$aNational income 615 7$aUnemployment 615 7$aWages 615 7$aWages, Compensation, and Labor Costs: General 700 $aGuscina$b Anastasia$01815669 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bWestern Hemisphere Department. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910968749103321 996 $aEffects of Globalization on Labor?s Share in National Income$94371213 997 $aUNINA
