Shadow States is the first book to unpack Sino-Indian tensions from the angle of competitive state-building - through a study of their simultaneous attempts to win the approval and support of the Himalayan people. When China and India tried to expand into the Himalayas in the twentieth century, their lack of strong ties to the region and the absence of an easily enforceable border made their proximity threatening - observing China and India's state-making efforts, local inhabitants were in a position to compare and potentially choose between them. Using rich and original archival research, Be?re?nice Guyot-Re?chard shows how India and China became each other's 'shadow states'. Understanding these recent, competing processes of state formation in the Himalayas is fundamental to understanding the roots of tensions in Sino-Indian relations. 606 $aGeopolitics$zHimalaya Moutains Region 606 $aSino-Indian Border Dispute, 1957- 607 $aChina$xForeign relations$zIndia 607 $aIndia$xForeign relations$zChina 607 $aChina$xTerritorial expansion$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aIndia$xTerritorial expansion$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aTibet Autonomous Region (China)$xHistory 615 0$aGeopolitics 615 0$aSino-Indian Border Dispute, 1957- 676 $a327.5405109/041 686 $aHIS017000$2bisacsh 700 $aGuyot-Re?chard$b Be?re?nice$0847667 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910150188803321 996 $aShadow states$91893308 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00956nam a2200289 i 4500 001 991001730709707536 005 20020503152957.0 008 010104s1968 it ||| | ita 035 $ab10264796-39ule_inst 035 $aEXGIL90575$9ExL 040 $aBiblioteca Interfacoltà$bita 082 0 $a157.7 100 1 $aStorr, Anthony$0212837 245 12$aL'aggressività nell'uomo /$cAnthony Storr 260 $aBari :$bDe Donato,$c1968 300 $a152 p. ;$c21 cm. 490 0 $aTemi e problemi 500 $aTrad.
