Drawing on in-depth interviews with economists, institutional analysis, and a wealth of scholarly evidence, Marion Fourcade traces the history of economics in each country from the late nineteenth century to the present, demonstrating how each political, cultural, and institutional context gave rise to a distinct professional and disciplinary configuration. She argues that because the substance of political life varied from country to country, people's experience and understanding of the economy, and their political and intellectual battles over it, crystallized in different ways--through scientific and mercantile professionalism in the United States, public-minded elitism in Britain, and statist divisions in France. Fourcade moves past old debates about the relationship between culture and institutions in the production of expert knowledge to show that scientific and practical claims over the economy in these three societies arose from different elites with different intellectual orientations, institutional entanglements, and social purposes. Much more than a history of the economics profession, Economists and Societies is a revealing exploration of American, French, and British society and culture as seen through the lens of their respective economic institutions and the distinctive character of their economic experts. 410 0$aPrinceton studies in cultural sociology. 606 $aEconomists$zUnited States 606 $aEconomists$zGreat Britain 606 $aEconomists$zFrance 606 $aEconomics$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aEconomics$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aEconomics$zFrance$xHistory$y20th century 615 0$aEconomists 615 0$aEconomists 615 0$aEconomists 615 0$aEconomics$xHistory 615 0$aEconomics$xHistory 615 0$aEconomics$xHistory 676 $a330.09/04 686 $a83.01$2bcl 700 $aFourcade$b Marion$f1968-$01214873 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910974740803321 996 $aEconomists and societies$92805282 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00914nam0 22002651i 450 001 UON00403034 005 20231205104705.607 010 $a978-86-519-0699-5 100 $a20120112d2010 |0itac50 ba 101 $asrp 102 $aRS 105 $a|||| 1|||| 200 1 $aMoc i strepnje$fDobrica Cosic 210 $aBeograd$cSluzbeni glasnik$d2010 215 $a141 p.$d22 cm. 620 $aRS$dBelgrado$3UONL001000 676 $a891.82$cLetteratura serbo-croata$v21 700 1$a?OSI?$bDobrica$3UONV138059$0636453 712 $aSlu?beni glasnik$3UONV270372$4650 801 $aIT$bSOL$c20250620$gRICA 899 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$2UONSI 912 $aUON00403034 950 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$dSI CROATO A 2047 $eSI EO 48337 5 2047 996 $aMoc i strepnje$91344644 997 $aUNIOR
