Interestingly the diencephalon located in the caudal forebrain has been ignored for decades. Consequently, the existing knowledge from the development of this region to function in the mature brain is very fragmented. The central part of the diencephalon is the thalamus. This central relay station plays a crucial role in distributing incoming sensory information to appropriate regions of the cortex. The thalamus develops in the posterior part of the embryonic forebrain, where early cell fate decisions are controlled by local signaling centers. In this Research Topic we discuss recent achievements elucidating thalamic neurogenesis - from neural progenitor cells to highly specialized neurons with cortical target cells in great distance. In parallel, we highlight developmental aspects leading from the early thalamic anlage to the late the organization of the complex relay station of the brain. 410 0$aFrontiers research topics. 606 $aThalamus 606 $aThalamus$xGrowth 606 $aNeurosciences 610 $athalamic neurogenesis 610 $aNeurons 610 $aThalamus 610 $aneural plate patterning 610 $aneural progenitor cells 615 0$aThalamus. 615 0$aThalamus$xGrowth. 615 0$aNeurosciences. 700 $aSteffen Scholpp$4auth$01363577 702 $aScholpp$b Steffen 702 $aShimogori$b Tomomori 801 0$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910136400703321 996 $aBuilding the gateway to consciousness - about the development of the thalamus$93384333 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02487oam 2200589 450 001 9910709684403321 005 20180522100321.0 035 $a(CKB)5470000002471389 035 $a(OCoLC)896810983$z(OCoLC)654369994 035 $a(OCoLC)995470000002471389 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002471389 100 $a20141123d1979 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aRelative slope stability and land-use planning in the San Francisco Bay region, California /$fby Tor H.
