In particular, it examines current work on the biology of language. Lyle Jenkins reviews the evidence that language is best characterized by a generative grammar of the kind introduced by Noam Chomsky in the 1950s and developed in various directions since that time. He then discusses research into the development of language which tries to capture both the underlying universality of human language, as well as the diversity found in individual languages (Universal Grammar). Finally, he discusses a variety of approaches to language design and the evolution of language. An important theme is the integration of biolinguistics into the natural sciences - the 'unification problem'. Jenkins also answers criticisms of the biolinguistic approach from a number of other perspectives, including evolutionary psychology, cognitive science, connectionism and ape language research, among others. 410 0$aCambridge approaches to linguistics. 606 $aBiolinguistics 606 $aGrammar, Comparative and general 615 0$aBiolinguistics. 615 0$aGrammar, Comparative and general. 676 $a401 700 $aJenkins$b Lyle$0591779 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455621703321 996 $aBiolinguistics$921643 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01667nam0 22003371i 450 001 UON00390487 005 20231205104609.559 010 $a90-520-1192-3 100 $a20110328d2003 |0itac50 ba 101 $afre 102 $aBE 105 $a|||| 1|||| 200 1 $aLittératures mineur en langue majeure$eQuébec/Wallonie-Bruxelles$e[actes du colloque de Liège, 9-11 octobre 2001]$ftextes réunis par Jean-Pierre Bertrand et Lise Gauvin, avec la collaboration de Laurent Demoulin 210 $aBruxelles$cLang Peter$d2003 215 $a318 p.$d22 cm. 316 $aDono degli Archives et Musée de la Littérature.
