David Teegarden demonstrates that the ancient Greeks promulgated these laws to harness the dynamics of mass uprisings and preserve popular democratic rule in the face of anti-democratic threats. He presents detailed historical and sociopolitical analyses of each law and considers a variety of issues: What is the nature of an anti-democratic threat? How would various provisions of the laws help pro-democrats counter those threats? And did the laws work? Teegarden argues that tyrant-killing legislation facilitated pro-democracy mobilization both by encouraging brave individuals to strike the first blow against a nondemocratic regime and by convincing others that it was safe to follow the tyrant killer's lead. Such legislation thus deterred anti-democrats from staging a coup by ensuring that they would be overwhelmed by their numerically superior opponents. Drawing on modern social science models, Teegarden looks at how the institution of public law affects the behavior of individuals and groups, thereby exploring the foundation of democracy's persistence in the ancient Greek world. He also provides the first English translation of the tyrant-killing laws from Eretria and Ilion. By analyzing crucial ancient Greek tyrant-killing legislation, Death to Tyrants! explains how certain laws enabled citizens to draw on collective strength in order to defend and preserve their democracy in the face of motivated opposition. 606 $aTyrannicide (Greek law) 607 $aGreece$xHistory$yAge of Tyrants, 7th-6th centuries 610 $aAlexander. 610 $aAreopagos council. 610 $aAsia Minor. 610 $aAthenian liberation. 610 $aAthenians. 610 $aAthens. 610 $aEresos. 610 $aEretria. 610 $aErukrates. 610 $aErythrai. 610 $aFour Hundred. 610 $aIlian. 610 $aIlion. 610 $aPhilites. 610 $aThirty Tyrants. 610 $aancient Greece. 610 $aancient Greek law. 610 $aancient Greeks. 610 $aanti-democracy. 610 $aanti-tyranny. 610 $aconquest. 610 $adecree of Demophantos. 610 $ademocracy. 610 $ademocratic rule. 610 $ademocrats. 610 $adossier. 610 $amass uprising. 610 $aoath of Demophantos. 610 $apolis. 610 $apublic law. 610 $apunitive action. 610 $atyranny. 610 $atyrant-killing law. 610 $atyrant-killing legislation. 610 $atyrants. 615 0$aTyrannicide (Greek law) 676 $a342.3808/54 686 $aNH 6820$qBSZ$2rvk 700 $aTeegarden$b David$01718946 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910807095003321 996 $aDeath to tyrants$94116313 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01257cam0 22003133 450 001 TWSOB00000510 005 20250729131153.0 100 $a20020521d1974 |||||ita|0103 ba 101 $aita 102 $aIT 200 1 $a<>opera completa di Poussin$fpresentazione e apparati critici e filologici di Jacques Thuillier 210 $aMilano$cRizzoli$d1974 215 $a136 p.
