His hypothesis, which is verifiable, relies on psychological and neurobiological evidence but is respectful of the human need for spiritual value. Ostow begins by classifying the three parts of the spiritual experience: awe, Spirituality proper, and mysticism. After he pinpoints the psychological origins of these feelings in infancy, he discusses the foundations of religious sentiment and practice and the brain processes associated with spiritual experience. He then focuses on spirituality's relationship to mood regulation, and the role of negative spirituality in fostering religious fundamentalism and demonic possession.Ostow concludes with an analysis of an essay by the psychoanalyst Donald M. Marcus, who recounts his own spiritual experience during a Native American-style "vision quest" in the woods. Marcus's account demonstrates the constructive potential of spirituality and the way in which spirituality retrieves and recapitulates feelings of attachment to the mother.Persuasively and brilliantly argued, Spirit, Mind, and Brain brings the disciplines of religion, behavorial neuroscience, and philosophy to bear on a groundbreaking new method for understanding religious ritual and belief. 410 0$aColumbia series in science and religion. 606 $aPsychoanalysis and religion 606 $aPsychology and religion 606 $aPsychology, Religious 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aPsychoanalysis and religion. 615 0$aPsychology and religion. 615 0$aPsychology, Religious. 676 $a201/.6150195 700 $aOstow$b Mortimer$0188450 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910451686403321 996 $aSpirit, mind, & brain$92447523 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02750nam 2200685 a 450 001 9910455457603321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a978-615-5211-70-6 010 $a978-6-15521-170-6 010 $a9786155211706 010 $a615-5211-70-1 010 $a1-4416-1816-3 035 $a(CKB)1000000000787418 035 $a(EBL)3137284 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000143967 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11134750 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000143967 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10144340 035 $a(PQKB)10088555 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3137284 035 $a(OCoLC)646811515 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse25954 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3137284 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10314022 035 $a(OCoLC)939263434 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000787418 100 $a20090122d2009 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 04$aThe edges of the medieval world$b[electronic resource] /$fedited by Gerhard Jaritz and Juhan Kreem 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aBudapest $cCentral European University, Department of Medieval Studies ;$aBudapest ;$aNew York $cCentral European University Press ;$aTallinn, Estonia $cCentre for Medieval Studies, Tallinn University$d2009 215 $a1 online resource (151 p.) 225 1 $aCEU medievalia,$x1587-6470 ;$v11 225 1 $aThe Muhu proceedings ;$v1 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a963-9776-45-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aTable of Contents; List of Illustrations; Preface; Felicitas Schmieder, Edges of the World - Edges of Time; Gerhard Jaritz, From the Peripheries to the Centres and Back: Visual Culture and the Edges of this World; Else Mundal, The Picture of the World in Old Norse Sources; Torstein Jĝrgensen, "The Land of the Norwegians is the Last in the World": A Mid-eleventh-century Description of the Nordic Countries from the Pen of Adam of Bremen; Anti Selart, Political Rhetoric and the Edges of Christianity: Livonia and Its Evil Elements in the Fifteenth Century 327 $aList of Contributors 410 0$aMuhu proceedings ;$v1. 410 0$aCEU medievalia ;$v11. 606 $aMiddle Ages$vCongresses 606 $aCivilization, Medieval$vCongresses 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMiddle Ages 615 0$aCivilization, Medieval 676 $a940.1 701 $aJaritz$b Gerhard$f1949-$0152575 701 $aKreem$b Juhan$01053704 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455457603321 996 $aThe edges of the medieval world$92485753 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01636nam 2200517 450 001 9910493660203321 005 20211007222224.0 010 $a3-8467-6400-0 024 7 $a10.30965/9783846764008 035 $a(CKB)4100000008965726 035 $a(OCoLC)1119076765 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9783846764008 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6517254 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL6517254 035 $a(OCoLC)1243541767 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000008965726 100 $a20211007d2019 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurun| uuuua 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cn$2rdamedia 183 $anc$2rdacarrier 200 10$aBaroque $efigures of excess in seventeenth-century european art and german literature /$fPeter J.
