Building on the insight that nationalisms and national identities endow economic policy with social purpose, Rawi Abdelal proposes a novel theoretical framework, a distinctively Nationalist perspective on international political economy, to answer this question. Using this framework, and drawing on field research in Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus, he provides an in-depth look at the link between national identity and the economic policies of the new states formed by the breakup of the Soviet Union. All these states, from the Baltic coast to central Asia, were economically dependent on Russia during the 1990's. However, they reacted very differently to that dependence, and their reactions can be traced, Abdelal contends, to their individual societies. Some, such as Belarus, found dependence inevitable and sought economic reintegration with Russia. Others, like Lithuania, interpreted dependence as a large-scale security threat and reoriented their economies away from Russia. A third group, typified by Ukraine, demonstrated no coherent economic policy at all regarding dependence. Abdelal distinguishes the Nationalist tradition in international political economy from the Realist tradition, and shows that economic nationalism is different than mercantilism. He demonstrates the ways that national identity affects economic policy and explains why some governments seek economic autonomy while others prefer regional reintegration. He then applies his approach to other cases of economic reorganization after the end of empire-eastern Europe in the 1920's after the Habsburgs, 1950's Indonesia, and French West Africa in the 1960's. 410 0$aCornell studies in political economy. 517 3 $aPost-Soviet states in comparative perspective 606 $aNationalism$zFormer Soviet republics 607 $aFormer Soviet republics$xCommercial policy 607 $aFormer Soviet republics$xEconomic integration 607 $aFormer Soviet republics$xForeign economic relations 615 0$aNationalism 676 $a338.947 700 $aAbdelal$b Rawi$01006123 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996248295203316 996 $aNational Purpose in the World Economy$92314795 997 $aUNISA LEADER 01199nam0 22003131i 450 001 UON00201425 005 20231205103255.434 010 $a27-01-11667-8 100 $a20030730d1991 |0itac50 ba 101 $afre 102 $aFR 105 $a|||| ||||| 200 1 $a Amérique latine$fClaude Bataillon, Jean-Paul Deler, Hervé Théry 210 $aMontpellier$cBelin / Reclus$d1991 215 $a480 p.$d28 cm. 410 1$1001UON00172082$12001 $a Géographie Universelle$1210 $aParis$cHachette / Reclus 606 $aAmerica latina$xGeografia$3UONC040489$2FI 620 $aFR$dMontpellier$3UONL000999 700 1$aBataillon$bClaude$3UONV100508$0342649 701 1$aDELER$bJean Paul$3UONV053542$0249935 701 1$aThery$bHervé$3UONV109489$0375747 712 $aBelin$3UONV259084$4650 712 $aReclus$3UONV265760$4650 801 $aIT$bSOL$c20251003$gRICA 899 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$2UONSI 912 $aUON00201425 950 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$dSI VII GEO F B 0024 $eSI SC 30973 5 0024 996 $aAmérique latine$91254414 997 $aUNIOR
