Sociology: The Ordinary and the Routine --$tBibliography --$tIndex 330 $aThis fresh and accessible ethnography offers a new vision of how society might cohere, in the face of on-going global displacement, dislocation, and migration. Drawing from intensive fieldwork in a highly diverse North London neighborhood, Daniel Miller and Sophie Woodward focus on an everyday item-blue jeans-to learn what one simple article of clothing can tell us about our individual and social lives and challenging, by extension, the foundational anthropological presumption of "the normative." Miller and Woodward argue that blue jeans do not always represent social and cultural difference, from gender and wealth, to style and circumstance. Instead they find that jeans allow individuals to inhabit what the authors term "the ordinary." Miller and Woodward demonstrate that the emphasis on becoming ordinary is important for immigrants and the population of North London more generally, and they call into question foundational principles behind anthropology, sociology and philosophy. 606 $aClothing and dress 606 $aDenim - Social aspects 606 $aDenim -- Social aspects 606 $aJeans (Clothing) - Social aspects 606 $aJeans (Clothing) -- Social aspects 606 $aJeans (Clothing) --Social aspects 606 $aMaterial culture 606 $aMaterial culture 606 $aJeans (Clothing)$xSocial aspects 606 $aDenim$xSocial aspects 606 $aClothing and dress 606 $aMaterial culture 606 $aAnthropology$2HILCC 606 $aSocial Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aManners & Customs$2HILCC 610 $aanthropology. 610 $aclass studies. 610 $aclothes. 610 $aclothing styles. 610 $aclothing. 610 $acommunity. 610 $acultural differences. 610 $adiverse population. 610 $adiversity. 610 $aethnography. 610 $afieldwork. 610 $agender studies. 610 $aglobal dislocation. 610 $aglobal displacement. 610 $aglobal migration. 610 $aglobalization. 610 $agreat britain. 610 $aimmigrants. 610 $aimmigration. 610 $aindividual lives. 610 $ainternational relations. 610 $ajeans. 610 $anormative. 610 $anorth london. 610 $aphilosophy. 610 $asocial differences. 610 $asocial lives. 610 $asociety. 610 $asociology. 610 $awealth studies. 615 4$aClothing and dress. 615 4$aDenim - Social aspects. 615 4$aDenim -- Social aspects. 615 4$aJeans (Clothing) - Social aspects. 615 4$aJeans (Clothing) -- Social aspects. 615 4$aJeans (Clothing) --Social aspects. 615 4$aMaterial culture. 615 4$aMaterial culture. 615 0$aJeans (Clothing)$xSocial aspects 615 0$aDenim$xSocial aspects 615 0$aClothing and dress 615 0$aMaterial culture 615 7$aAnthropology 615 7$aSocial Sciences 615 7$aManners & Customs 676 $a391.476 700 $aMiller$b Daniel$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0118348 702 $aWoodward$b Sophie$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910789732703321 996 $aBlue Jeans$93702010 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03326nam 2200601 450 001 9910788648503321 005 20170821165138.0 010 $a0-8218-7797-6 035 $a(CKB)3240000000069735 035 $a(EBL)3113075 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000629338 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11398667 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000629338 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10732593 035 $a(PQKB)11044130 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3113075 035 $a(RPAM)3069572 035 $a(PPN)197105335 035 $a(EXLCZ)993240000000069735 100 $a19970224h19971997 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aHarmonic functions on trees and buildings $eWorkshop on Harmonic Functions on Graphs, October 30-November 3, 1995, City University of New York /$fAdam Kora?nyi, editor ; with minicourses by D.
