How have their meanings changed through time? In this new volume of cultural history, David Hackett Fischer shows how these varying ideas form an intertwined strand that runs through the core of American life. Fischer examines liberty and freedom not as philosophical or political abstractions, but as folkways and popular beliefs deeply embedded in American culture. Tocqueville called them "habits of the heart." From the earliest colonies, Americans have shared ideals of liberty and freedom, but with very different meanings. Like DNA these ideas have transformed and recombined in each generation. The book arose from Fischer's discovery that the words themselves had differing origins: the Latinate "liberty" implied separation and independence. The root meaning of "freedom" (akin to "friend") connoted attachment: the rights of belonging in a community of freepeople. The tension between the two senses has been a source of conflict and creativity throughout American history. Liberty & Freedom studies the folk history of those ideas through more than 400 visions, images, and symbols. It begins with the American Revolution, and explores the meaning of New England's Liberty Tree, Pennsylvania's Liberty Bells, Carolina's Liberty Crescent, and "Don't Tread on Me" rattlesnakes. In the new republic, the search for a common American symbol gave new meaning to Yankee Doodle, Uncle Sam, Miss Liberty, and many other icons. In the Civil War, Americans divided over liberty and freedom. Afterward, new universal visions were invented by people who had formerly been excluded from a free society--African Americans, American Indians, and immigrants. The twentieth century saw liberty and freedom tested by enemies and contested at home, yet it brought the greatest 330 8 $aoutpouring of new visions, from Franklin Roosevelt's Four Freedoms to Martin Luther King's "dream" to Janis Joplin's "nothin' left to lose." Illustrated in full color with a rich variety of images, Liberty and Freedom is, literally, an eye-opening work of history--stimulating, large-spirited, and ultimately, inspiring. 410 0$aAmerica: a cultural history, Volume III 606 $aNational characteristics, American 606 $aLiberty$xHistory 607 $aUnited States$xHistory 607 $aUnited States$xPolitics and government 607 $aUnited States$xHistory$vPictorial works 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aNational characteristics, American. 615 0$aLiberty$xHistory. 676 $a323.44/0973 700 $aFischer$b David Hackett$f1935-$0889326 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453269403321 996 $aLiberty and freedom$92473251 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02966 am 2200733 n 450 001 9910137102403321 005 20160728 010 $a88-6705-359-0 024 7 $a10.4000/books.ledizioni.758 035 $a(CKB)3710000000824679 035 $a(FrMaCLE)OB-ledizioni-758 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/60458 035 $a(PPN)197596401 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000824679 100 $a20160812j|||||||| ||| 0 101 0 $aita 135 $auu||||||m|||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aTabucchi o del Novecento /$fVincenzo Russo 210 $aMilano $cLedizioni$d2016 215 $a1 online resource (129 p.) 330 $aOTTO SAGGI E UNA TESTIMONIANZA. 606 $aLiterature (General) 606 $avingtième siècle 606 $aAntonio Tabucchi 606 $aTabucchi 606 $alittérature ibérique 606 $aNovecento 606 $aiberistica 606 $aitalianistica 606 $atwentieth century 606 $aiberian literature 610 $aAntonio Tabucchi 610 $aiberian literature 610 $atwentieth century 610 $aTabucchi 615 4$aLiterature (General) 615 4$avingtième siècle 615 4$aAntonio Tabucchi 615 4$aTabucchi 615 4$alittérature ibérique 615 4$aNovecento 615 4$aiberistica 615 4$aitalianistica 615 4$atwentieth century 615 4$aiberian literature 700 $aBigalli$b Davide$0155780 701 $aCatelli$b Giovanni$01296351 701 $aCioccarelli$b Alessandra$01296352 701 $aManera$b Danilo$0540863 701 $aMulinacci$b Roberto$0793164 701 $aPiazza$b Isotta$0608403 701 $aRusso$b Vincenzo$0191358 701 $aSpaggiari$b William$0157990 701 $aTabucchi$b Antonio$0164112 701 $aVecchi$b Roberto$01290280 701 $aRusso$b Vincenzo$0191358 801 0$bFR-FrMaCLE 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910137102403321 996 $aTabucchi o del Novecento$93024034 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01262nam0 22002651i 450 001 UON00180373 005 20231205103129.403 100 $a20030730d1979 |0itac50 ba 101 $aita 102 $aIT 105 $a|||| 1|||| 200 1 $aCultura popolare e beni culturali$eProblemi di ricerca e documentazione$fGian Luigi Bravo 210 $aTorino$cTirrenia$d1979 - 221 p. ; 21 cm. 316 $aDonazione prof.ssa Amalia Signorelli$5IT-UONSI F.
