By drawing a clear line between the denotatum and the designatum and viewing gender as part of the solution to the problem of giving linguistic representation to a mental construal of a spatial nature, this study avoids one of the recurrent stumbling blocks which has hindered research -- the temptation to define a grammatical category using biological parameters. The evidence presented shows that gender is not a representation of the presence or absence of sex, human traits, or even personality, but rather the sign of a more abstract mental operation, that which consists in defining the contained space, the form which is implied by any notional content construed in the nominal domain. 410 0$aCahiers de Psychomécanique du Langage 517 $aGender in Modern English 606 $aEnglish language$xPronoun 606 $aEnglish language$xGender 615 0$aEnglish language$xPronoun. 615 0$aEnglish language$xGender. 676 $a429.55 700 $aMorris$b Lori$f1959-$01740734 701 $aDuffley$b Patrick J$0623238 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910862094203321 996 $aGender in Modern English$94166538 997 $aUNINA
