Recent work, however, has shifted away from these notions. We now see that cultures cannot be studied as units with internal coherence and that the microcosm does not represent a cultural whole. This book proposes an alternative. Differentiation is the keyword that lets us focus on ruptures, contradiction, and change within a society. It drives us to recognize many different histories as opposed to one official history. The case studies in Between History and Histories use this new approach in historical anthropology to examine how certain events are silenced in the shadow of others that are commemorated by monuments, ceremonies, documents, and story-telling. The first set of studies explores cases around the world where the official construction of the past has been contested. The second set describes the silences voiced as a result of these disputes. For students, this collection provides a useful overview of interaction between two disciplines. For historians and anthropologists, it offers a new vision of how history is produced. 410 0$aAnthropological horizons ;$v11. 606 $aMemorials$vCongresses 606 $aHistoriography$vCongresses 606 $aPublic history$vCongresses 606 $aHistory$vCongresses 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMemorials 615 0$aHistoriography 615 0$aPublic history 615 0$aHistory 676 $a909 702 $aSider$b Gerald M. 702 $aSmith$b Gavin A. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456429803321 996 $aBetween history and histories$92478272 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01226nam0 22002771i 450 001 UON00089837 005 20231205102504.950 100 $a20020107d1975 |0itac50 ba 101 $ager 102 $aDE 105 $a|||| ||||| 200 1 $aCIL XV 8017-8622$eSignacula Aenea.
