L'espressione "human-centered city" ben evidenzia l'approccio alla base di questo cambio di paradigma. L'autore conduce la ricerca intrecciando diverse discipline: la socio-semiotica, che consente di focalizzare sul senso dello spazio urbano e su come i processi sociali e le tecnologie contribuiscano a ri-crearlo; lo human-centered design, che mira a riflettere su come le soluzioni per gli spazi urbani possano essere realizzate sulla base di esigenze sociali condivise; la comunicazione pubblica, che intende focalizzare sull'importanza di riformulare la relazione tra Istituzioni e cittadini.
