Bell 210 $cOUP Oxford 311 $a0-19-870255-8 311 $a0-19-870254-X 330 8 $aThe failure of the Allied fleet to force a passage through the Straits of the Dardanelles in 1915 drove Winston Churchill from office (First Lord of the Admiralty) in disgrace and nearly destroyed his political career. For over a century, Churchill has been both praised and condemned for his role in launching this highly controversial campaign. For some, the Dardanelles offensive was a brilliant concept that might have dramatically shortened the First World War. To many others, however, Churchill was a reckless amateur who drove his unwilling and misinformed colleagues into a venture that was doomed to fail. This book, based on exhaustive archival research, provides a detailed and authoritative account of the Gallipoli campaign's origins and execution, stripping away the layers of myth that have long surrounded these dramatic events, and showing that no simple verdict is either possible or fair. Naval historian Christopher M. Bell untangles Churchill's complicated relationship with the dynamic First Sea Lord, Admiral Jacky Fisher, and reveals for the first time the behind-the-scenes machinations that led to Churchill's removal from office, including Fisher's covert campaign to undermine support for the Dardanelles operation, and the leaks by figures in high places that fuelled a bitter press campaign to drive Churchill from power. Equal attention is also given to the perhaps even more important story of Churchill and the Dardanelles after 1915. As Bell shows, Churchill spent a good deal of time and effort in the following two decades trying to refute his critics and convince the wider public that the campaign had in fact nearly succeeded. These efforts were so successful that the legacy of the Dardanelles did not stand in the way of Churchill becoming Prime Minister in May 1940--Provided by publisher. 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xCampaigns$zTurkey$zGallipoli Peninsula 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xCampaigns$zTurkey$zGallipoli Peninsula$xPublic opinion 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xCampaigns 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xCampaigns$xPublic opinion. 676 $a940.4/26 700 $aBell$b Christopher M.$01139129 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910792650703321 996 $aChurchill and the Dardanelles$93775809 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02566nam 2200517Ia 450 001 9910790516603321 005 20230802010604.0 010 $a0-7022-3912-7 035 $a(CKB)2550000001131997 035 $a(EBL)1028008 035 $a(OCoLC)811507544 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000777499 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12369962 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000777499 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10755643 035 $a(PQKB)11291849 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1028008 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000001131997 100 $a20120920d2012 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aLarrikins$b[electronic resource] $ea history /$fMelissa Bellanta 210 $aSt. Lucia, Queensland ;$aChicago $cUniversity of Queensland Press$d2012 215 $a1 online resource (256 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-7022-4774-X 311 $a1-306-00455-1 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; Author biography; Copyright; Contents; List of Illustrations; Figure 1.; Figure 2.; Figure 3.; Introduction: The true blue Aussie larrikin; Chapter One: The leary bloke; Chapter Two: The brazen girl; Chapter Three: The pull of the push; Chapter Four: The Mount Rennie outrage; Chapter Five: Larrikin style; Chapter Six: All the world's a football field; Chapter Seven: The demise of the flash larrikin; Afterword: Larrikinism since 1930; Acknowledgments; Endnotes; Index 330 $aAustralia has often been said to possess a "larrikin streak," from the Stiffy and Mo cartoons and the true-blue Crocodile Hunter to the characters in the silent film The Sentimental Bloke. When it first emerged around 1870, larrikin was a term of abuse, used to describe teenage, working-class hell-raisers who populated dance halls and cheap theaters, and this account journeys through the street-based youth subculture known as larrikinism between 1870 and 1920, swerving through the streets of Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
