Did British rule lead to India's impoverishment, economic disruption and famine? Under British rule, evidence suggests there were beneficial improvements, with an eventual rise in life expectancy and an increase in wealth for some sectors of the population and economy, notably for much business and industry. Yet many poor people suffered badly, with agricultural stagnation and an underfunded government who were too small to effect general improvements. In this book Roy explains the paradoxical combination of wealth and poverty, looking at both sides of nineteenth century capitalism. Between 1850 and 1930, India was engaged in a globalization process not unlike the one it has seen since the 1990s. The difference between these two times is that much of the region was under British colonial rule during the first episode, while it was an independent nation state during the second. Roy's narrative has a contemporary relevance for emerging economies, where again globalization has unleashed extraordinary levels of capitalistic energy while leaving many livelihoods poor, stagnant, and discontented. . 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in Economic History,$x2662-6500 606 $aEconomic history 606 $aImperialism 606 $aAsia$xEconomic conditions 606 $aAgriculture$xEconomic aspects 606 $aDevelopment economics 606 $aEconomic policy 606 $aEconomic History 606 $aImperialism and Colonialism 606 $aAsian Economics 606 $aAgricultural Economics 606 $aDevelopment Economics 606 $aEconomic Policy 615 0$aEconomic history. 615 0$aImperialism. 615 0$aAsia$xEconomic conditions. 615 0$aAgriculture$xEconomic aspects. 615 0$aDevelopment economics. 615 0$aEconomic policy. 615 14$aEconomic History. 615 24$aImperialism and Colonialism. 615 24$aAsian Economics. 615 24$aAgricultural Economics. 615 24$aDevelopment Economics. 615 24$aEconomic Policy. 676 $a330.954 676 $a330.954035 700 $aRoy$b Tirthankar$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0460938 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910337674903321 996 $aHow British Rule Changed India?s Economy$92225540 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01274nam0 22003011i 450 001 UON00033141 005 20231205102110.285 010 $a97-940768-2-1 100 $a20020107d1994 |0itac50 ba 101 $aind 102 $aID 105 $a|||| 1|||| 200 1 $aKau datang padaku$eAntologi Puisi Jerman pada Abad Ke-20$fdisunting dan diterjemahkan Bertold Damshauser dan Ramadhan K.H 210 $aJakarta$cBalai Pustaka$d1994 215 $a120 p.$d22 cm 316 $aFatt. prof. del 6.1.98$5IT-UONSI INDSVID/004 N 606 $aLetteratura universale$xTraduzioni$xIndonesiano$3UONC012243$2FI 620 $aID$dJakarta$3UONL000164 686 $aINDS VI D$cINDONESIA - LETTERATURA - TRADUZIONI DA ALTRE LINGUE$2A 700 1$aDAMSHAUSER$bBerthold$3UONV023501$0645701 701 1$aRAMADHAN$bKanta Hadimaja (1927-)$3UONV006564$0645702 712 $aBalai Pustaka$3UONV246152$4650 801 $aIT$bSOL$c20251003$gRICA 899 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$2UONSI 912 $aUON00033141 950 $aSIBA - SISTEMA BIBLIOTECARIO DI ATENEO$dSI INDS VI D 004 N $eSI SA 89015 5 004 N Fatt. prof. del 6.1.98 996 $aKau datang padaku$91192366 997 $aUNIOR
