On the one hand, several scholars share his view that it would be inadequate to generally take at face value the explicit message of texts which were composed in an era in which severe sanctions were imposed on those who entertained deviating views. ?Reading between the lines? therefore seems to be the appropriate hermeneutical approach. On the other hand, the risks of such an interpretative maxim are more than obvious, as it might come up to an unlimited license to ascribe heterodox doctrines to early modern philosophers whose manifest teachings were in harmony with the orthodox positions of their time. The contributions to this volume both address these methodological issues and discuss paradigmatic cases of authors who might indeed be candidates for a Straussian ?reading between the lines?: Hobbes, Spinoza, and Bayle. 410 0$aNew studies in the history and historiography of philosophy. 606 $aPhilosophy, Modern 606 $aMethodology 610 $aHermeneutics. 610 $aatheism. 610 $aearly modern philosophy. 610 $afree thought. 615 0$aPhilosophy, Modern. 615 0$aMethodology. 676 $a181/.06 702 $aSchro?der$b Winfried 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797815103321 996 $aReading between the lines - Leo Strauss and the history of early modern philosophy$92399927 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01558nam1 22002531i 450 001 UON00027106 005 20231205102044.272 010 $a01-957715-8-3 100 $a20020107g18541974 |0itac50 ba 101 $aeng 102 $aIN 105 $a|||| 1|||| 200 1 $aˆA ‰History of India under the Two First Sovereigns of the House of Taimur, Baber and Humayun$fby William Erskine$gwith an intr. by P.
