The natural foods movement grew out of this contrarian spirit. Through a politics of principled shopping, eating, and entrepreneurship, food revolutionaries dissented from corporate capitalism and mainstream America. In Food for Dissent, Maria McGrath traces the growth of the natural foods movement from its countercultural fringe beginning to its twenty-first-century "food revolution" ascendance, focusing on popular natural foods touchstones--vegetarian cookbooks, food co-ops, and health advocates. Guided by an ideology of ethical consumption, these institutions and actors spread the movement's oppositionality and transformed America's foodscape, at least for some. Yet this strategy proved an uncertain instrument for the advancement of social justice, environmental defense, and anti-corporatism. The case studies explored in Food for Dissent indicate the limits of using conscientious eating, shopping, and selling as tools for civic activism. 606 $aVerbraucherverhalten$2gnd 606 $aProtest$2gnd 606 $aNahrung$2gnd 606 $aLebensmittelverbrauch$2gnd 606 $aGegenkultur$2gnd 606 $aEthik$2gnd 606 $aErnährungsgewohnheit$2gnd 606 $aNatural foods industry$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01034043 606 $aNatural foods$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01034032 606 $aFood habits$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00930807 606 $aConsumer movements$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01893339 606 $aNatural foods industry$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aConsumer movements$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aNatural foods$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aFood habits$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aUnited States$2fast 608 $aHistory. 608 $aElectronic books. 610 0$anatural foods movement 610 0$afood for dissent book 610 0$aethical consumption history 610 0$acountercultural food activism 610 0$apolitics of eating 610 0$anatural foods 610 0$afood revolution history 610 0$aconscientious consumerism 610 0$afood politics 610 0$avegetarian cookbook history 610 0$ahealth food revolution 610 0$awhole foods movement 610 0$anatural eating 1970s 610 0$aorganic food history 610 0$aclean eating origins 610 0$afood justice activism 610 0$aradical food politics 610 0$aconsumer activism in food 610 0$a60s and 70s social movements 610 0$aalternative food systems 610 0$acivic activism through food 610 0$ahistory of ethical eating 610 0$aanti-corporate food choices 610 0$ahippie food culture 610 0$acultural politics of food 610 0$afood and environmentalism 610 0$asustainable food movement origins 610 0$afood reform in America 610 0$aethical eating and political change 610 0$afood studies and activism 610 0$aAmerican food history 610 0$apolitical consumerism in the US 610 0$asociology of food systems 610 0$aAmerican studies food culture 610 0$abooks on food activism 610 0$ahistory of natural foods 610 0$afood revolution timeline 610 0$ahow food became political 610 0$anatural foods in America 610 0$abooks on ethical shopping 610 0$avegetarianism and politics 610 0$aco-ops and the counterculture 610 0$arise of health food in the US 610 0$acan food choices be political? 610 0$ahistory of food co-ops in America 610 0$adid the food revolution succeed? 610 0$ahow the counterculture changed food 610 0$aAmerican food activism history 610 0$aroots of ethical eating 610 0$afood as civic resistance 610 0$athe politics of healthy food 610 0$aethical food consumption limits 610 0$alegacy of natural food activism 615 7$aVerbraucherverhalten. 615 7$aProtest. 615 7$aNahrung. 615 7$aLebensmittelverbrauch. 615 7$aGegenkultur. 615 7$aEthik. 615 7$aErnährungsgewohnheit. 615 7$aNatural foods industry. 615 7$aNatural foods. 615 7$aFood habits. 615 7$aConsumer movements. 615 7$aNatural foods industry$xHistory 615 7$aConsumer movements$xHistory 615 7$aNatural foods$xHistory 615 7$aFood habits$xHistory 676 $a394.1209730904 700 $aMcGrath$b Maria$f1965- 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9911145193703321 997 $aUNINA
