Tra i tanti legami fra Celati e la produzione modernista, questo saggio sceglie di indagare il suo rapporto con il capolavoro di Joyce. Le riflessioni di Celati su questo romanzo intercettano vari indirizzi di ricerca contemporanei: visualità, oralità, parodia, regressione ? tutti temi tipici dell'autore, e di fondamentale importanza nella riflessione letteraria del XX secolo, dal modernismo a oggi. Quella con l'Ulisse è d'altronde una relazione che puntella in più tappe l'intero percorso intellettuale di Celati, che si laurea con una tesi su Joyce nel 1965 e traduce Ulysses per l'Einaudi nel 2013. Non sorprende, dunque, che il nome dell'irlandese compaia nelle riflessioni sul comico e sul carnevalesco nella stagione degli anni Settanta. 330 $aPer Celati, quella di Joyce è una regressione parodizzante, in aperta opposizione alla razionalistica e autoritaria civiltà borghese; una regressione che, mentre mette in scena il crollo del sapere occidentale, lo libera da dogmi e costrizioni.
