Loosely speaking, an ME distribution is obtained through replacing the intensity parameter in an exponential distribution by a matrix. The ME distributions can also be identified as the class of non-negative distributions with rational Laplace transforms. If the matrix has the structure of a sub-intensity matrix for a Markov jump process we obtain a PH distribution which allows for nice probabilistic interpretations facilitating the derivation of exact solutions and closed form formulas. The full potential of ME and PH unfolds in their use in stochastic modelling. Several chapters on generic applications, like renewal theory, random walks and regenerative processes, are included together with some specific examples from queueing theory and insurance risk. We emphasize our intention towards applications by including an extensive treatment on statistical methods for PH distributions and related processes that will allow practitioners to calibrate models to real data. Aimed as a textbook for graduate students in applied probability and statistics, the book provides all the necessary background on Poisson processes, Markov chains, jump processes, martingales and re-generative methods. It is our hope that the provided background may encourage researchers and practitioners from other fields, like biology, genetics and medicine, who wish to become acquainted with the matrix-exponential method and its applications. . 410 0$aProbability Theory and Stochastic Modelling,$x2199-3130 ;$v81 606 $aProbabilities 606 $aOperations research 606 $aManagement science 606 $aProbability Theory and Stochastic Processes$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M27004 606 $aOperations Research, Management Science$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M26024 615 0$aProbabilities. 615 0$aOperations research. 615 0$aManagement science. 615 14$aProbability Theory and Stochastic Processes. 615 24$aOperations Research, Management Science. 676 $a658.4034 700 $aBladt$b Mogens$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0766758 702 $aNielsen$b Bo Friis$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254279703321 996 $aMatrix-Exponential Distributions in Applied Probability$92283936 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02448nam 2200565Ia 450 001 9911138271003321 005 20251116190627.0 010 $a0-8166-9540-7 035 $a(CKB)1000000000346760 035 $a(EBL)310829 035 $a(OCoLC)476096479 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000140503 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11139493 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000140503 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10053302 035 $a(PQKB)11208593 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL310829 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10159533 035 $a(OCoLC)123239591 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC310829 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000346760 100 $a19980807d1999 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 13$aLa doctora $ethe journal of an American doctor practicing medicine on the Amazon River /$fLinnea Smith 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aDuluth, Minn. $cPfeifer-Hamilton Publishers$dc1999 215 $a1 online resource (266 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a0-8166-4249-4 327 $aTable of Contents; 1 ""My Wife Can't Have Her Baby!""; Leap into the Unknown; Life on the Amazon; Jungle Doctor; Clinic Expansion; More Jungle Medicine; The End of the Beginning 330 $aIn 1990, Dr. Linnea Smith went to Peru on an ecotourism vacation.
