He was an authority on Māori and Polynesian studies, a controversial 'socialist' and secretary of the Department of Labour, and a key player in attempts to form a united political labour movement in New Zealand. He was also a social critic, novelist and poet. This biography traces Tregear's career from his youthful days on the 1860s frontier as an anguished, exiled Briton to his position as eminent antipodean figure singing the praises of 'national culture' in New Zealand. 606 $aAuthors, New Zealand -- 20th century -- Biography 606 $aIntellectuals -- New Zealand -- Biography 606 $aLinguists -- New Zealand -- Biography 606 $aNew Zealand -- Intellectual life -- 20th century 606 $aPoliticians -- New Zealand -- Biography 606 $aSocial reformers -- New Zealand -- Biography 606 $aTregear, Edward, -- 1846-1931 606 $aIntellectuals$xBiography$y20th century$zNew Zealand 606 $aPoliticians$zNew Zealand$vBiography 606 $aSocial reformers$xBiography$zNew Zealand 606 $aAuthors, New Zealand$xBiography$zNew Zealand 606 $aLinguists$vBiography 606 $aHistory & Archaeology$2HILCC 606 $aRegions & Countries - Australia & Pacific Islands - Oceania$2HILCC 615 4$aAuthors, New Zealand -- 20th century -- Biography. 615 4$aIntellectuals -- New Zealand -- Biography. 615 4$aLinguists -- New Zealand -- Biography. 615 4$aNew Zealand -- Intellectual life -- 20th century. 615 4$aPoliticians -- New Zealand -- Biography. 615 4$aSocial reformers -- New Zealand -- Biography. 615 4$aTregear, Edward, -- 1846-1931. 615 0$aIntellectuals$xBiography 615 0$aPoliticians 615 0$aSocial reformers$xBiography 615 0$aAuthors, New Zealand$xBiography 615 0$aLinguists 615 7$aHistory & Archaeology 615 7$aRegions & Countries - Australia & Pacific Islands - Oceania 676 $a993.02092 700 $aHowe$b K.
