Despite the region?s significant potential, it continues to face complex challenges and significant capital shortages. In theory, FDI could promote development by supplementing domestic savings, enhancing financial systems, and promoting global integration, but it can also weaken the balance of payments and undermine domestic investment. In addition, SSA?s weak institutions and poor governance means that FDI may also contribute to dysfunctional capitalism and tax evasion. This book argues that colonial legacies and flawed policy choices have entrenched institutional weaknesses and socio-economic outcomes that deter diversified FDI and attract extractive FDI, leading to underdevelopment and resource dependency while undermining industrialization and diversification. This book will be relevant to students, researchers, and policymakers interested in development economics and the political economy of SSA. Sean J. Gossel is Professor at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business where he teaches, supervisors, and researches topics in the areas of financial economics and financial globalisation with a particular focus on economic development in sub-Saharan Africa. . 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in African and Development Economics,$x3004-961X 606 $aDevelopment economics 606 $aEconomics 606 $aAfrica$xEconomic conditions 606 $aEvolutionary economics 606 $aInstitutional economics 606 $aDevelopment Economics 606 $aPolitical Economy and Economic Systems 606 $aAfrican Economics 606 $aInstitutional and Evolutionary Economics 615 0$aDevelopment economics. 615 0$aEconomics. 615 0$aAfrica$xEconomic conditions. 615 0$aEvolutionary economics. 615 0$aInstitutional economics. 615 14$aDevelopment Economics. 615 24$aPolitical Economy and Economic Systems. 615 24$aAfrican Economics. 615 24$aInstitutional and Evolutionary Economics. 676 $a332.6730967 700 $aGossel$b Sean$01850841 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9911031575803321 996 $aThe Promise and Peril of FDI in Sub-Saharan Africa$94444098 997 $aUNINA
