However, the history written until the 1970s and 1980s excluded women. Sigrid Schönfelder illustrates how the American West served as a catalytic gold mine for many transformations for women. It draws on the life narratives of three healthcare providers whose devotion within the social reform movements of the long nineteenth century contributed significantly to shaping healthcare policies. Their stories show how women contributed to place-making in the West and served as role models for other women to enter the field of medicine. 330 1 $a»Die Autorin [hat] eine gut geschriebene und umfänglich recherchierte Studie vorgelegt, die zu Debatten einlädt.« 410 0$aAmerican Culture Studies 517 2 $aSchönfelder, »Gold Fever« and Women$eTransformations in Lives, Health Care and Medicine in the 19th Century American West 606 $aWomen 606 $aMedicine 606 $aHealthcare 606 $aNineteenth Century 606 $aAmerican West 606 $aAmerica 606 $aGender 606 $aCultural History 606 $aAmerican History 606 $aGender Studies 606 $aHistory of Medicine 606 $aCultural Studies 615 4$aWomen 615 4$aMedicine 615 4$aHealthcare 615 4$aNineteenth Century 615 4$aAmerican West 615 4$aAmerica 615 4$aGender 615 4$aCultural History 615 4$aAmerican History 615 4$aGender Studies 615 4$aHistory of Medicine 615 4$aCultural Studies 676 $a605 700 $aSchönfelder$b Sigrid$p
