In an era where economic leverage is increasingly used as a tool of statecraft, nations worldwide are struggling with the complexities of economic warfare. The book discusses contested terminology and concepts, often blurred with geoeconomics, economic statecraft, and weaponized interdependence. Through a thorough analysis of organizational structures, doctrines, and strategic cultures, the book explores the legitimacy and implications of using economic means to influence state behavior. As global actors ramp up their economic warfare capabilities, it questions whether such strategies are a necessary evolution or a disruptive force to international norms. The book will appeal to students, researchers, and scholars of international relations, political science, security studies, and defence studies, as well as policy-makers and practitioners interested in a better understanding of the future of global economic security. 410 0$aContributions to Security and Defence Studies,$x2948-2291 606 $aSecurity, International 606 $aPolitics and war 606 $aInternational economic relations 606 $aEurope$xPolitics and government 606 $aInternational relations 606 $aInternational Security Studies 606 $aMilitary and Defence Studies 606 $aInternational Political Economy? 606 $aEuropean Politics 606 $aForeign Policy 615 0$aSecurity, International. 615 0$aPolitics and war. 615 0$aInternational economic relations. 615 0$aEurope$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aInternational relations. 615 14$aInternational Security Studies. 615 24$aMilitary and Defence Studies. 615 24$aInternational Political Economy?. 615 24$aEuropean Politics. 615 24$aForeign Policy. 676 $a330.905 700 $aKennedy$b Greg$01092476 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9911021976903321 996 $aEconomic Warfare in the 21st Century$94429237 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03135nam 22006372 450 001 9910961082803321 005 20151005020621.0 010 $a1-139-79439-6 010 $a1-139-88958-3 010 $a1-139-78302-5 010 $a1-139-77699-1 010 $a1-139-34257-6 010 $a1-139-78003-4 010 $a1-139-78388-2 010 $a1-283-71478-7 010 $a1-139-77851-X 035 $a(CKB)2550000000708221 035 $a(EBL)1042535 035 $a(OCoLC)819508261 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000756230 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11463357 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000756230 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10731934 035 $a(PQKB)10282817 035 $a(UkCbUP)CR9781139342575 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1042535 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1042535 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10618611 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL402728 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000708221 100 $a20120305d2012|||| uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 14$aThe limits of altruism in democratic Athens /$fMatthew Christ 210 1$aCambridge :$cCambridge University Press,$d2012. 215 $a1 online resource (x, 215 pages) $cdigital, PDF file(s) 300 $aTitle from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015). 311 08$a1-107-02977-5 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and indexes. 327 $aIntroduction: the philanthropic Athenian? -- 1. Helping behavior in classical Athens -- 2. Helping and democratic citizenship -- 3. Helping and community in the Athenian law courts -- 4. "Helping others" in Athenian interstate relations -- Conclusion: helping and the Athenian experience. 330 $aAthenians in the classical period (508-322 BC) were drawn to an image of themselves as a compassionate and generous people who rushed to the aid of others in distress, both at home and abroad. What relation does this image bear to actual Athenian behavior? This book argues that Athenians felt little pressure as individuals to help fellow citizens whom they did not know. Democratic ideology called on citizens to refrain from harming one another rather than to engage in mutual support, and emphasized the importance of the helping relationship between citizen and city rather than among individual citizens. If the obligation of Athenians to help fellow citizens was fairly tenuous, all the more so was their responsibility to intervene to assist the peoples of other states; a distinct pragmatism prevailed in the city's decisions concerning intervention abroad. 606 $aAltruism$xPolitical aspects$zGreece$zAthens$xHistory$yTo 1500 607 $aAthens (Greece)$xPolitics and government 615 0$aAltruism$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 676 $a320.938/5 686 $aHIS002000$2bisacsh 700 $aChrist$b Matthew Robert$01844833 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910961082803321 996 $aThe limits of altruism in democratic Athens$94428005 997 $aUNINA
