CONCLUDING REMARKS""; ""Appendix""; ""References"" 330 3 $aWe construct estimates of external assets and liabilities for 145 countries for the period 1970-2004. We describe our estimation methods and present key features of the data at the country and the global level. We focus on trends in net and gross external positions, and the composition of international portfolios, distinguishing between foreign direct investment, portfolio equity investment, official reserves, and external debt. We document the increasing importance of equity financing and the improvement in the external position for emerging markets, and the differing pace of financial integration between advanced and developing economies. We also show the existence of a global discrepancy between estimated foreign assets and liabilities, and identify the asset categories that account for this discrepancy. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/069 606 $aForeign property 606 $aBalance of trade 606 $aDebts, External 606 $aForeign exchange 606 $aBalance of payments$2imf 606 $aCurrent Account Adjustment$2imf 606 $aCurrent account$2imf 606 $aEmerging and frontier financial markets$2imf 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aExternal position$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aFinancial Instruments$2imf 606 $aFinancial services industry$2imf 606 $aForeign assets$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aInstitutional Investors$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aInternational finance$2imf 606 $aInternational Investment$2imf 606 $aInvestment & securities$2imf 606 $aInvestments, Foreign$2imf 606 $aInvestments: Stocks$2imf 606 $aLong-term Capital Movements$2imf 606 $aNon-bank Financial Institutions$2imf 606 $aPension Funds$2imf 606 $aShort-term Capital Movements$2imf 606 $aStocks$2imf 607 $aUnited States$2imf 615 0$aForeign property. 615 0$aBalance of trade. 615 0$aDebts, External. 615 0$aForeign exchange. 615 7$aBalance of payments 615 7$aCurrent Account Adjustment 615 7$aCurrent account 615 7$aEmerging and frontier financial markets 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aExternal position 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aFinancial Instruments 615 7$aFinancial services industry 615 7$aForeign assets 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aInstitutional Investors 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aInternational finance 615 7$aInternational Investment 615 7$aInvestment & securities 615 7$aInvestments, Foreign 615 7$aInvestments: Stocks 615 7$aLong-term Capital Movements 615 7$aNon-bank Financial Institutions 615 7$aPension Funds 615 7$aShort-term Capital Movements 615 7$aStocks 700 $aLane$b Philip$01816065 701 $aMilesi-Ferretti$b Gian$01812538 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bResearch Department. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910956119703321 996 $aThe External Wealth of Nations Mark II$94371805 997 $aUNINA
