At the heart of ordinary moral judgements is a notion of moral inescapability, or practical authority, which, upon investigation, cannot be reasonably defended. Joyce argues that natural selection is to blame, in that it has provided us with a tendency to invest the world with values that it does not contain, and demands that it does not make. Should we therefore do away with morality, as we did away with other faulty notions such as witches? Possibly not. We may be able to carry on with morality as a 'useful fiction' - allowing it to have a regulative influence on our lives and decisions, perhaps even playing a central role - while not committing ourselves to believing or asserting falsehoods, and thus not being subject to accusations of 'error'. 410 0$aCambridge studies in philosophy. 606 $aEthics 615 0$aEthics. 676 $a170 700 $aJoyce$b Richard$f1966-$01466229 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779924303321 996 $aThe myth of morality$93676607 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04265nam 22009973u 450 001 9911018970703321 005 20210117142703.0 010 $a9786610285679 010 $a9781280285677 010 $a1280285672 010 $a9780470704455 010 $a0470704454 010 $a9780470775875 010 $a0470775874 010 $a9781405153027 010 $a1405153024 035 $a(CKB)1000000000351815 035 $a(EBL)243559 035 $a(OCoLC)437159275 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000104059 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11140812 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000104059 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10071546 035 $a(PQKB)10442252 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC243559 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4661915 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4661915 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10249079 035 $a(OCoLC)958580130 035 $a(PPN)19122247X 035 $a(Perlego)2750781 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000351815 100 $a20131014d2008|||| u|| | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aAnthropologies of Modernity $eFoucault, Governmentality, and Life Politics 210 $aHoboken $cWiley$d2008 215 $a1 online resource (288 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a9780631228264 311 08$a0631228268 327 $aAnthropologies of Modernity; Contents; Notes on Contributors; Acknowledgments; Analytics of the Modern: An Introduction; Part I Colonial Reasons; 1 Colonial Governmentality; 2 Foucault in the Tropics: Displacing the Panopticon; Part II Global Governance; 3 Graduated Sovereignty in South-East Asia; 4 Spatializing States: Toward an Ethnography; Part III Technico Sciences; 5 Performing Criminal Anthropology: Science,; 6 Science and Citizenship under Postsocialism; Part IV Biosocial Subjects; 7 Artificiality and Enlightenment: From Sociobiology to Biosociality 327 $a8 Flexible Eugenics: Technologies of the Self in the Age of GeneticsPart V Necropolitical Projects; 9 Life During Wartime: Guatemala, Vitality, Conspiracy, Milieu; 10 Technologies of Invisibility: Politics of Life and Social Inequality; Index 330 $aThis book brings together a range of anthropological writings that are inspired by the French philosopher Michel Foucault and examine Foucault's contribution to current theories of modernity. Treats modernity as an ethnographic object by focusing on its concrete manifestations. Tackles issues of broad interest: from colonialism and globalization to war, genetics, and AIDS. Draws on work from North and South America, Europe, Africa, and South and Southeast Asia. Contributors include James Ferguson, Akhil Gupta, Aihwa Ong, Paul Rabinow, and Rayna Rapp.
