White concentrates his study in Pennsylvania, a state in which the majority of the population was rural, and in Philadelphia, a city that was a center of publishing and politics and the national capital for a decade. Against this backdrop, White reads classic political texts such as Crv?ecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer, Franklin's Autobiography, and Paine's "Agrarian Justice," alongside missionary and captivity narratives, farmers' petitions, and Native American treaties. Using historical and ethnographic sources to enrich familiar texts, White demonstrates the importance of rural areas in the study of U.S. nation formation and finds unexpected continuities between the early colonial period and the federal ascendancy of the 1790s. 606 $aAmerican literature$xColonial period 606 $aCity and town life 606 $aHistoriography 607 $aNordamerika$xhistoria$y1700-talet$2sao 607 $aNordamerika$2idszbz 607 $aNordamerika$2gnd 607 $aFrontier$2gnd 607 $aNorth America$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJxRHKPqWyj6g89H9PwHmd$2fast 607 $aAmerique du Nord$xConditions rurales 607 $aAmerique du Nord$xColonisation 607 $aAmerique du Nord$xHistoire$yca 1600-1775 (Periode coloniale)$xHistoriographie 607 $aAmerique du Nord$xHistoire$yca 1600-1775 (Periode coloniale) 607 $aNorth America$xRural conditions 607 $aNorth America$xColonization 607 $aNorth America$xHistory$yColonial period, ca. 1600-1775$xHistoriography 607 $aNorth America$xHistory$yColonial period, ca. 1600-1775 608 $aHistory. 608 $aCriticism, interpretation, etc. 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aAmerican literature$xColonial period. 615 0$aCity and town life. 615 0$aHistoriography. 676 $a320.973/09/033 700 $aWhite$b Ed$01850769 712 02$aBig Ten Academic Alliance.$4Funder 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9911018869303321 996 $aThe Backcountry and the City$94443952 997 $aUNINA
