From indigenous novels and Japanese anime to art installations and truth commission reports, Susan McHugh analyzes source material from a variety of regions and cultures to highlight cases where traditional knowledge works in tandem with modern ways of thinking about human-animal relations. In contrast to success stories of such relationships, the narratives McHugh highlights show the vulnerabilities of affective bonds as well as the kinds of loss shared when interspecific relationships are annihilated. In this thoughtful critique, McHugh explores the potential of these narratives to become a more powerful, urgent strategy of resistance to the forces that work to dehumanize people, eradicate animals, and threaten biodiversity. As we unevenly contribute to the sixth great extinction, this timely, compelling study sheds light on what constitutes an effective response from a humanities-focused, interdisciplinary perspective. McHugh's work will appeal to scholars working at the crossroads of human-animal studies, literature, and visual culture, as well as artists and activists who are interested in the intersections of animal politics with genocide and indigeneity. 410 0$aAnthropoScene: the SLSA Book 606 $aHuman-animal relationships in literature$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00963492 606 $aGenocide in literature$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00940224 606 $aAnimal welfare in literature$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01902371 606 $aLITERARY CRITICISM$xModern$y20th century $2bisacsh 606 $aRelations homme-animal dans la litterature 606 $aAnimal welfare in literature 606 $aGenocide in literature 606 $aHuman-animal relationships in literature 615 7$aHuman-animal relationships in literature. 615 7$aGenocide in literature. 615 7$aAnimal welfare in literature. 615 7$aLITERARY CRITICISM$xModern 615 6$aRelations homme-animal dans la litterature. 615 0$aAnimal welfare in literature. 615 0$aGenocide in literature. 615 0$aHuman-animal relationships in literature. 676 $a809/.93362 700 $aMcHugh$b Susan$0604958 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9911009273003321 996 $aLove in a Time of Slaughters$94394747 997 $aUNINA
