Yet the single legal status that the enslaved shared often obscures the very different characteristics of slavery evident in our evidence. This book provides a nuanced picture of Athenian slavery and its consequences from the perspective of slaveholding strategies, evidencing the varying ways in which Athenian slave owners employed their enslaved and the different methods of social control they utilised to do so. This approach, drawn from the work of historian Joseph Miller, eschews static definitions of 'the institution of slavery', in favour of a more dynamic progression of varied, though interrelated, phenomena. Applying this methodology to classical Athenian evidence sheds light on the complexity of the city state's slave system and explicates the wide variations in the lives of Athenian slaves. Jason Douglas Porter furthers academic understanding of the complex relationships between slavery, Athenian society and economy through recognising the diverse motivations and contexts that drove these varied forms of exploitation." -- Provided by publisher. 410 0$aEdinburgh Studies in Ancient Slavery Series 606 $aSlavery$zGreece$7Generated by AI 606 $aSlavery$xEconomic aspects$7Generated by AI 607 $aGreece$xHistory 615 0$aSlavery 615 0$aSlavery$xEconomic aspects. 676 $a306.36209385 700 $aPorter$b Jason$01837295 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910988091103321 996 $aDiverse Slaveries$94443364 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00776nam0-22002891i-450 001 990005046370403321 005 20251127095516.0 035 $a000504637 035 $aFED01000504637 035 $a(Aleph)000504637FED01 100 $a19990530g18779999km-y0itay50------ba 101 0 $afre 102 $aFR 105 $ay-------001yy 200 1 $aMélanges d'histoire littèraire$fpar J.J.
