The text combines insights from semi-structured interviews with Dominican-American students enrolled at the college, with autoethnographic reflection by the author, also a Dominican-American scholar. By investigating the stories of six individuals, who arrived in the US without any English proficiency, the book captures many of the financial, social, linguistic, environmental and cultural challenges faced by immigrants in the US. Focusing on how these three individuals developed resilience to these pressures however, the volume moves beyond a deficit understanding of the immigrant experience to highlight how individuals have drawn on personal, cultural, and social strengths to build resilience and achieve academic success. The stories provide a model of resilience for helping other community college students and in particular, students with an immigrant background to achieve academic success despite overwhelming odds. 606 $aPsychology 606 $aEducational psychology 606 $aPsychology, Comparative 606 $aEthnology 606 $aBehavioral Sciences and Psychology 606 $aEducational Psychology 606 $aComparative Psychology 606 $aEthnography 606 $aEtnografia$2thub 606 $aEstudiants universitaris$2thub 606 $aEducació superior$2thub 606 $aResiliència (Tret de la personalitat)$2thub 606 $aPsicologia del desenvolupament$2thub 606 $aMigració (Població)$2thub 606 $aMinories$2thub 606 $aDominicans (República Dominicana)$2thub 607 $aEstats Units d'Amèrica$2thub 608 $aLlibres electrònics$2thub 615 0$aPsychology. 615 0$aEducational psychology. 615 0$aPsychology, Comparative. 615 0$aEthnology. 615 14$aBehavioral Sciences and Psychology. 615 24$aEducational Psychology. 615 24$aComparative Psychology. 615 24$aEthnography. 615 7$aEtnografia 615 7$aEstudiants universitaris 615 7$aEducació superior 615 7$aResiliència (Tret de la personalitat) 615 7$aPsicologia del desenvolupament 615 7$aMigració (Població) 615 7$aMinories 615 7$aDominicans (República Dominicana) 676 $a150 700 $aReynoso$b Nelson$01785861 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910983085603321 996 $aPromoting Resilience and Inspiration$94317312 997 $aUNINA
