Activists viewed modern advertising as propaganda that undermined the ability of consumers to live in a healthy civic environment. Organized consumer movements fought the emerging ad business and its practices with fierce political opposition. Inger L. Stole examines how consumer activists sought to limit corporate influence by rallying popular support to moderate and change advertising. Stole weaves the story through the extensive use of primary sources, including archival research done with consumer and trade group records, as well as trade journals and engagement with the existing literature. Her account of the struggle also demonstrates how public relations developed in order to justify laissez-faire corporate advertising in light of a growing consumer rights movement, and how the failure to rein in advertising was significant not just for civic life in the 1930s but for our era as well. 517 3 $aConsumer activism and corporate public relations in the 1930s 606 $aAdvertising$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aCorporations$xPublic relations$zUnited States 615 0$aAdvertising$xHistory. 615 0$aCorporations$xPublic relations 676 $a659.1/0973/09043 700 $aStole$b Inger L$01806739 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910970610903321 996 $aAdvertising on trial$94356091 997 $aUNINA LEADER 06525oam 2200793 c 450 001 9910978245503321 005 20251202090341.0 010 $a9783839462829 010 $a3839462827 024 7 $a10.1515/9783839462829 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC7268870 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL7268870 035 $a(DE-B1597)663337 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783839462829 035 $a(Perlego)4181020 035 $a(CKB)27498451900041 035 $a(transcript Verlag)9783839462829 035 $a(EXLCZ)9927498451900041 100 $a20251202d2023 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aNeedful Structures$eThe Dialectics of Action, Technology, and Society in Sartre's Later Philosophy$fMarcel Siegler 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aBielefeld$ctranscript Verlag$d2023 215 $a1 online resource (213 pages) 225 0 $aEdition panta rei 311 08$aPrint version: Siegler, Marcel Needful Structures Bielefeld : transcript,c2023 9783837662825 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aCover -- Contents -- Introduction -- Needful Structures -- Research Problem -- Research Approach -- Motivation and Research Context -- Structure of this Work -- I Dialectical Foundations -- 1. Marcel Siegler explores the dialectical relationship between human needs and desires, the demands and requirements of the built world, and the forms of organization that hold both humans and the built world together. He argues that complex societal constellations emerge from the actions individuals perform with the technological means at hand to satisfy their needs and desires in the short and long run. Based on a novel, complementary reading of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, the study develops a conceptual framework for analyzing the intricate machinations of sociotechnical systems from a perspective on situated human-technology interaction. 410 0$aEdition panta rhei. 517 2 $aSiegler, Needful Structures$eThe Dialectics of Action, Technology, and Society in Sartre's Later Philosophy 606 $aSartre 606 $aDialectics 606 $aAction 606 $aPhilosophy of Technology 606 $aSocial Ontology 606 $aSociotechnical System 606 $aTechnology 606 $aSociety 606 $aFrench History of Philosophy 606 $aSocial Philosophy 606 $aPolitical Theory 606 $aPhilosophy 615 4$aSartre 615 4$aDialectics 615 4$aAction 615 4$aPhilosophy of Technology 615 4$aSocial Ontology 615 4$aSociotechnical System 615 4$aTechnology 615 4$aSociety 615 4$aFrench History of Philosophy 615 4$aSocial Philosophy 615 4$aPolitical Theory 615 4$aPhilosophy 676 $a128.4 700 $aSiegler$b Marcel$p
