All three novels commence as conventional Bildungsromane, yet the plots of all diverge from the usual narrative structure, as a result of both their colonial origins and the clash between their aspirational heroines and the plots available to them. In an analysis including gender, empire, nation and race, Empire Girls provides new critical perspectives on the ways in which this dominant narrative form performs very differently when taken out of its metropolitan setting. 606 $aWomen and literature 606 $aBildungsromans$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish fiction$y19th century 615 0$aWomen and literature. 615 0$aBildungsromans$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish fiction 700 $aTreagus$b Mandy$0802510 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910976783703321 996 $aEmpire girls$92214561 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02685nam 2200685Ia 450 001 9910962512103321 005 20251117083000.0 010 $a1-317-14155-5 010 $a1-315-58026-8 010 $a1-317-14154-7 010 $a1-283-09035-X 010 $a9786613090355 010 $a1-4094-2549-5 035 $a(CKB)2550000000033175 035 $a(EBL)684507 035 $a(OCoLC)726829416 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000536385 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11336351 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000536385 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10546524 035 $a(PQKB)11101427 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL684507 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10464412 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL922743 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL5293728 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL309035 035 $a(OCoLC)1027159472 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC684507 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC5293728 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000033175 100 $a20101119d2011 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aEthical foreign policy? $eU.S. humanitarian interventions /$fChih-Hann Chang 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aSurrey, England ;$aBurlington, VT $cAshgate$d2011 215 $a1 online resource (199 p.) 225 1 $aEthics and global politics 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a1-4094-2548-7 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; Contents; Acknowledgements; 1 Introduction; 2 Debates on Ethical Foreign Policy in the Aftermath of the Cold War; 3 Ethical Realism and Responsible Power; 4 US Foreign Policy after the Cold War: Clinton's Foreign Policy; 5 The Clinton Administration's Intervention in Bosnia; 6 The Clinton Administration's Intervention in Kosovo; 7 Conclusion; Bibliography; Index 330 $aChang provides a deeper understanding of ethical foreign policy in theory and practice by providing an in-depth study of ethical realism and examining US humanitarian interventions.
