CONCLUSIONS""; ""References"" 330 3 $aThis paper studies whether compliance with the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision (BCPs) improves bank soundness. The authors find a significant and positive relationship between bank soundness (measured with Moody's financial strength ratings) and compliance with principles related to information provision2. Specifically, countries that require banks to regularly and accurately report their financial data to regulators and market participants have sounder banks. This relationship is robust to controlling for broad indexes of institutional quality, macroeconomic variables, sovereign ratings, and reverse causality. Measuring soundness through Z-scores yields similar results. These findings emphasize the importance of transparency in making supervisory processes effective and strengthening market discipline. Countries aiming to upgrade banking regulation and supervision should consider giving priority to information provision over other elements of the core principles. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/242 517 3 $aCompliance with Basel Core Principles and bank soundness 606 $aBanks and banking$xState supervision 606 $aBank regulation$2imf 606 $aBank soundness$2imf 606 $aBank supervision$2imf 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aBasel Core Principles$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and Regulation$2imf 606 $aFinancial services law & regulation$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and Regulation$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 606 $aState supervision$2imf 607 $aHong Kong Special Administrative Region, People's Republic of China$2imf 615 0$aBanks and banking$xState supervision. 615 7$aBank regulation 615 7$aBank soundness 615 7$aBank supervision 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aBanks and banking 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aBasel Core Principles 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and Regulation 615 7$aFinancial services law & regulation 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and Regulation 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMortgages 615 7$aState supervision 700 $aDetragiache$b Enrica$0120810 701 $aDemirgüç-Kunt$b Asli$01421879 701 $aTressel$b Thierry$01804345 712 02$aIMF Institute. 712 02$aWorld Bank. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910975150903321 996 $aBanking on the Principles$94371579 997 $aUNINA
