Using a data set covering the period 1990-2005, we find that the exchange rate pass-through to inflation declined in the late 1990s despite the depreciation of the currency. This could be partly attributed to the macroeconomic and structural reforms that were implemented during this period. The decline in the pass-through does not necessarily imply that exchange rate fluctuations are less significant in explaining macroeconomic fluctuations. The recent increase in the share of imports in the economy suggests that the pass-through could rise over the medium term. The findings imply that the authorities should remain vigilant in assessing the potential impact of foreign prices on the dynamics of inflation in Tanzania. In this regard, the authorities should seek to maintain low and stable inflation and continue the ongoing structural reforms designed to improve efficiency and increase competition. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/150 606 $aForeign exchange rates$zTanzania 606 $aInflation (Finance)$zTanzania 606 $aConsumer price indexes$2imf 606 $aCurrency$2imf 606 $aDeflation$2imf 606 $aExchange rate pass-through$2imf 606 $aExchange rates$2imf 606 $aForeign Exchange$2imf 606 $aForeign exchange$2imf 606 $aInflation$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aMonetary base$2imf 606 $aMonetary economics$2imf 606 $aMonetary Policy, Central Banking, and the Supply of Money and Credit: General$2imf 606 $aMoney and Monetary Policy$2imf 606 $aMoney supply$2imf 606 $aPrice indexes$2imf 606 $aPrice Level$2imf 606 $aPrices$2imf 607 $aTanzania, United Republic of$2imf 615 0$aForeign exchange rates 615 0$aInflation (Finance) 615 7$aConsumer price indexes 615 7$aCurrency 615 7$aDeflation 615 7$aExchange rate pass-through 615 7$aExchange rates 615 7$aForeign Exchange 615 7$aForeign exchange 615 7$aInflation 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aMonetary base 615 7$aMonetary economics 615 7$aMonetary Policy, Central Banking, and the Supply of Money and Credit: General 615 7$aMoney and Monetary Policy 615 7$aMoney supply 615 7$aPrice indexes 615 7$aPrice Level 615 7$aPrices 700 $aMwase$b Nkunde$01815885 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910975149103321 996 $aAn Empirical Investigation of the Exchange Rate Pass-Through to Inflation in Tanzania$94371494 997 $aUNINA
