Fortunately, advances made over the past three decades in mining technology, equipment, processes, procedures, and workforce education and training have significantly improved safety and health. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Safety and Health Research Program (Mining Program) has played a large role in these improvements. An assessment of the relevance and impact of NIOSH Mining Program research by a National Research Council committee reveals that the program makes essential contributions to the enhancement of health and safety in the mining industry. To further increase its effectiveness, the Mining Program should proactively identify workplace hazards and establish more challenging and innovative goals toward hazard reduction. The ability of the program to successfully expand its activities, however, depends on available funding. 517 3 $aReviews of research programs of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 606 $aMine safety$xResearch$xEvaluation 606 $aMineral industries$xHealth aspects 606 $aMiners$xHealth 606 $aMining$3(DNLM)D008906 606 $aAccidents, Occupational$xprevention & control$3(DNLM)D000062Q000517 606 $aOccupational Diseases$xprevention & control$3(DNLM)D009784Q000517 615 0$aMine safety$xResearch$xEvaluation. 615 0$aMineral industries$xHealth aspects. 615 0$aMiners$xHealth. 615 12$aMining. 615 22$aAccidents, Occupational$xprevention & control. 615 22$aOccupational Diseases$xprevention & control. 676 $a622 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910974697303321 996 $aMining safety and health research at NIOSH$94425886 997 $aUNINA
